Clinton Campaign: Obama Divisive For Calling Us Out On Smear
politico.com — Seriously, WTF: The Clinton campaign puts out a response from Maggie Williams, which doesn't respond to the question of whether a staffer was circulating the photo of Obama in Somali garb, instead: "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed."

Wait, didnt THEY release the photo? SO THEY are the ones trying to distract the public.- Andrej73, on 02/26/2008, -3/+12Somebody became insane.
- Ajajadude, on 02/26/2008, -0/+29Clinton is certainly making ME insane with all the nonsense she's putting out there.
- Nitesmoke, on 02/26/2008, -1/+24Hillary must think is retarded. Everyone with a little common sense can see she is getting more and more desperate. The whole issue with her releasing this photo is not only low and sleazy, but also offensive. She assumes, that most Americans are racist and will see him in a turban and decide she is the lesser of two evils. This is wrong on so many levels. Its over Hillary, try to have a little dignity, you're embarrassing yourself.
- wolferz, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6@nitesmoke
the fun part is when obama's camp notes this is the tactic she is using Hillary's camp tries to spin the Obama camp's claim that being shown wearing "traditional Somali clothing" would be divisive is itself racist... that's some well thought out entrapment right there.
But hey... at least she's a better liar than Bush.
- americangoy, on 02/26/2008, -2/+10Clinton using Republican Karl Rove tactics...
Shocked?
I am not...

- TheSwashbuckler, on 02/26/2008, -30/+5"Wait, didnt THEY release the photo?"
Did they? Got any evidence? Or is this faith-based knowledge that Bush and his minions are so famous for?- chambana, on 02/26/2008, -1/+9And your comment makes it seem like her campaign doesn't plot. Come on, give the hildawg more cred than that.
- beloitpiper, on 02/26/2008, -2/+7We WOULD have evidence, but Hillary's campaign isn't giving us any answers. Therefore, I'll assume they did until they tell us that they didn't...seems pretty on par with what her campaign has been doing thus far.
- pauleric, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10Drudge put the story up and said his source was Clinton staffers. Just like any other news story in any newspaper or magazine where they cite their sources, but sometimes say "high ranking administration official" or something like that because the person doesn't want their actual name known. If you think Drudge is a liar, then that's fine, but you could be just as skeptical about any news story.
- buhbyebot, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5You would make a great cop! The way you look at evidence and figure out who would profit most and who needs this more than someone else. It's amazing! you could be the next super-detective.
/sarcasm - cleverboy, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3The Drudge Report noted a "Clinton Staffer". If it wasn't an outright admission from the source, I would imagine that the email itself had markers in it that the staffer simply didn't understand. Moreover, this is the same tactic used in January when "scare" emails were forwarded, a staffer or two was canned, and I believe that was fully confirmed. The reason why Clinton won't explicitly DENY (as opposed to claim ignorance) that this came from a staffer, is that she can't. The closer she moved toward denying, the more she's playing defense, not offense, and the closer she gets to a poor PR moment if "proof" gets released.
- UltraMegaFilms, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3This isn't WoW. You can't just use the word minion.
- withincontext, on 02/26/2008, -2/+17They brought in Maggie Williams hoping a little ball busting would get Clinton the nomination. Fortunately, enough people are tired of this *****. Just keep digging, Clinton.
- cranium, on 02/26/2008, -0/+11The race card isn't going to win this hand regardless of *who* plays it. Go home, Hillary.
- qwerter, on 02/26/2008, -2/+26Is it just me, or has the Clinton campaign been on the crazy train ever since the staff shakeup?
- simX, on 02/26/2008, -23/+1NO THEY DID NOT RELEASE THE PHOTO. Jeebus, this was denied by the Clinton campaign, and there's no evidence to the contrary.
- chambana, on 02/26/2008, -1/+18Yea no DNA proof. Except they never issued an unequivocal denial, which in political speak means some staffer certainly did circulate it. Whether the hildawg knew is another question.
- aliengoods, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Drudge, who put up the photo, noted a Clinton staffer gave it to him. The Clinton campaign would neither confirm or deny it. They only said it wasn't authorized and they have many people working for them. Draw your own conclusions.
- praxisseizure, on 02/26/2008, -4/+2political: KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL tee hee.. smiles afterward.
- artwork, on 02/26/2008, -6/+2How do you know the Clinton campaign released it? Source please.
- buhbyebot, on 02/26/2008, -3/+3How do you know they did not? Source please. That's a great game you play there. What are the rules? I've got one for you. Who is losing their fat ass so badly that this would be just the ticket to draw attention away from, oh, I don't know, 11 straight losses, and NAFTA. Use that logical brain that's been dormant all these 18 years that you've nevver ***** used.
- EntropyFan, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1So it is guilt by innuendo again. No need for proof, just a Salem witch hunt or a McCarthy Red Scare and we get to cook Clinton.
The 11 straight losses are minimal ( they are still quite even ) and NAFTA works better then Tariffs and isolationism.
- EntropyFan, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1So it is guilt by innuendo again. No need for proof, just a Salem witch hunt or a McCarthy Red Scare and we get to cook Clinton.
- StarlessKnight, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4How hard would it be to say: "Even if it were released with malintent, we weren't the ones that did it." Sounds like they'd want to do that, seeing how them releasing it could only be taken one way, and praising Obama for being multicultural isn't it.
- fluxion, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5when you ask someone if they did something, and they come back with a response like this...they did it.
- rotten777, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The Drudge Report said it was a Clinton staffer. The source of the photo to many said where it came from. That good enough for ya?
- jforjools, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0SOURCES PLEASE??
1.) On day 1 of this story breaking, several Clinton top-notchers (including Maggie) made a clear NON-DENIAL. Worse yet, they did not even denounce 'anyone else' who may have done it. ...so they avoided answering a simple question: did you did this? ...and they avoided the secondary question: is it wrong to play on people's fears regarding race/religion?
2.) By Day 2 of newscycle, we have Hilary saying that she has no knowledge of this happening.
Read: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman...Monica Lewinsky."
3.) Even now, the HRC machine is not acknowledging that this photo has any racial/religious messages attached to it. (They should not only acknowledge it, they should decry it--and say 'shame' on the folks that did it...which is themselves, of course.) I think it's very telling that the clinonistas are so ready to point out how there's so many pictures of Hilary herself wearing 'local dress'. (There point is: "so what's the big deal?") There is a huge difference between the photos of her, a blonde white woman dressed in 'foreign garb', and of Obama, a black man--who some falsely fear of being a dangerous Muslim-- wearing foreign, African, "Muslim-looking" clothing.
The fact that the HRC won't even acknowledge #3 is all the more telling. ...This came from her camp. And I don't excuse her if she had no knowledge of it personally. This came from her organization...and she can't control crap like this, I certainly don't want her trying to run my country.
- buhbyebot, on 02/26/2008, -3/+3How do you know they did not? Source please. That's a great game you play there. What are the rules? I've got one for you. - Andrej73, on 02/26/2008, -3/+12Somebody became insane.
- uptown, on 02/26/2008, -3/+116So they want it both ways .... circulate the photo to disparage their competitor, then say they're somehow at fault for responding to what was obviously a veiled attack. The amazing part of that strategy is that it implies stupidity on the part of the voter. It's as if they sit around assuming they're so much smarter than the voters they hope to sway that nobody will see how clever they are. It's disgusting, and insulting ... and the lowest form of politics. Pathetic.
- LanceStallion, on 02/26/2008, -2/+26What they weren't counting on was the majority of the American public seeing through their scam. Nice try, Hillary. way to keep burying your own campaign. Just another nail in the coffin, and it can't come soon enough.
- phybere, on 02/26/2008, -1/+18You really think the American public sees through this? You have more faith than I do.
Remember, digg isn't representative of the American public.- LanceStallion, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3Yeah I do. It's Hillary. People are realizing that a vote for Hillary doesn't mean we get Bill back and re-create the 90s.
- kazamx, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5Thats because Digg has a lot of people from outside the US keeping you all on track. I believe we could all make the world a better place. I want to see the adopt an American programme set up. Each person from outside the US will adopt a yank and slap them round the head everytime they start to believe some ***** pumped out by Fox news or the President.

here is a nice picture - Acolon77, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Unfortunately, we forget that many of those voters were 'that stupid'...I mean, for crying out loud, how else does this moron Bush steal TWO elections? It has to be close for them to steal it. The good thing is there's a lot of people who learned from that stupid mistake.
- LanceStallion, on 02/26/2008, -2/+26What they weren't counting on was the majority of the American public seeing through their scam. Nice try, Hillary. way to keep burying your own campaign. Just another nail in the coffin, and it can't come soon enough.
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 02/26/2008, -6/+105Clinton Campaign: Pay no attention to our smear tactics... but pay CLOSE attention to his.
Talk about a double standard.- arbouler, on 02/26/2008, -1/+14american politics has always been like that. we treat some terorrist states like we're best friends and we sanction some other terrorist states we dont like.
washington needs to CHANGE!- rotten777, on 02/26/2008, -0/+2Washington needs a gun barrel in their mouths and told to GTFO for what they have done in the past.

- petrodollar, on 02/26/2008, -1/+11Do you mean lower?
- gravytrain73, on 02/26/2008, -2/+3That would make more sense to me...
- soot, on 02/26/2008, -6/+3No.
Glass ceiling: "A solid but invisible barrier against the advancement of women and minorities in the workplace."- MikeSD34, on 02/26/2008, -2/+10It's an invisible barrier keeping those individuals from raising up any higher, so if you are lowering it, you're making their situation worse. You're doing something good if you raise it, or remove it, which I don't think was the intention of the original poster.
- fluxion, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1oh. i thought this was a "people who live in glass houses shouldnt throw rocks" type of deal. hillary's house has alot of glass, etc.
- SheilaNoya, on 02/26/2008, -4/+66Obama's campaign needs to ignore Hillary and just respond logically to the photo. Wearing traditional Somali garb while visiting doesn't make him a Muslim any more than Bush wearing a Chinese robe makes him a Communist. What about Laura Bush in her Muslim headscarf when she visited a mosque? This whole thing is absurd.
- buhbyebot, on 02/26/2008, -3/+9Mostly it's just Hillary and her campaign that are absurd. She will go down in history [the only way she'll go down] as one of the strangest, craziest, ***** moronic people ever to hold public office. They will write entire page long articles /s about how not to handle yourself during a campaign.
- CC440, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4There Will Be Books
- jabelar, on 02/26/2008, -7/+0That was my thought. Obama should have just said "hey great for showing that, it was great to revisit my father's country and experience the culture." Clinton has actually exposed some embarassment Obama may have for his heritage.
- rotten777, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1He's not embarrassed. He always speaks about how his father was from Kenya and was a non-practicing Muslim. Maybe you should listen to a few of his speeches.
- Jordan117, on 02/26/2008, -1/+3Sure, it sounds that simple. But the Clinton campaign is counting on there being enough people who are barely paying attention to see the photo and assume the worst, without doing any other kind of research.
It's kinda like the folks on Digg who spread smears about Obama voting for the Patriot Act and being a CFR member when the real information is so readily available online. If a net-savvy Digg user can't be bothered to do even a cursory Google search on the "facts" they're spreading, how can some sheltered soccer mom in the Midwest?
It's so much easier to hit the "Forward to All" button...

- PopcornDave, on 02/26/2008, -3/+41Slowly but surely the curtain on the all mighty and powerful Hillary is being pulled back, much to the chagrin of her supporters and she's being shown for what she is.
- cranium, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2Are you kidding? If her supporters had any idea how evil she really is they'd e after her with torches and pitchforks.
- Railz, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6They know how evil she is, unfortunately they just want a Vagina in office.
- cranium, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2Are you kidding? If her supporters had any idea how evil she really is they'd e after her with torches and pitchforks.
- jforjools, on 02/26/2008, -5/+58Divisive? Yes, that's exactly what this photo is meant to be.
Why else would it be relevant to submit this photo? Were there any photos submitted of him wearing a Hawaiian shirt while visiting his sister? No, of course not, because that image would not incite fear and distrust.
Luckily, this image does not incite fear and distrust among many of us. It should not. It is as relevant someone wearing a tuxedo to their own wedding. ...But it is defintiely divisive and fearmongering. It prods those who already have fears surrounding race and religion.
Afterall, if you're a guy who doesn't want to get hitched, isn't just the image of your girl in a WEDDING DRESS and bouquet in her hands just enough to give you the willies?
Lastly, we all noticed the obvious NON-DENIAL by the Clinton camp.- RRJackson, on 02/26/2008, -9/+1After they swear McCain in maybe he can say something about how the Republicans may be a flawed party, but they don't tend to try to destroy their own. Both Clinton and Obama have behaved reprehensibly in this election cycle. Meanwhile, I've yet to hear this kind of nasty in-fighting among the Republicans. They like to talk about not believing in evolution or chasing their enemies into the "Gates of Hell" and shooting them with an NRA-approved weapon, but at least they don't go after each other. All while we do their work for them within our own ranks.
- Devotia, on 02/26/2008, -2/+9Don't try to destroy their own? Obviously you've never heard about McCain's illegitimate black children...
- goomba323, on 02/26/2008, -2/+8Apparently you were missing it when Romney was attacking every other candidate in the race. And then McCain started to fight back. And then McCain gets the nomination all but wrapped up but Huckabee refuses to drop out just to prove that McCain can't get the conservative vote. Yeah, the Republican party seems to be falling apart just as much as the Democratic one (oddly enough, Obama is still the only one who seems to have his head above any serious controversies and campaign malfunctions).
- Railz, on 02/26/2008, -2/+4Golden Rule of the republicans is, "Never talk ill of another republican"
- RRJackson, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Why does it not surprise me that a lot of Diggers seem to be defending the use of smear tactics?
- RRJackson, on 02/26/2008, -9/+1After they swear McCain in maybe he can say something about how the Republicans may be a flawed party, but they don't tend to try to destroy their own. All while we do their work for them within our own ranks.
- underdugg, on 02/26/2008, -5/+16After the intent of these smear tactics sinks-in among the rank-and-file who currently support Obama, how does she expect to win in November?
She doesn't have a chance of getting a good portion of these voters back. She must know that, right? Therefore, she must *really* want to hobble Obama, so she can run against McCain in 2012.
A "coup de Gore" (coup de grace to Hillary) can't happen soon enough.- cranium, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5Absolutely she wants this. Remember during Kerry's campaign, any time Kerry was making headlines her and Bill systematically took turns doing things to steal the limelight from him.
- NoDrama, on 02/26/2008, -2/+9The only reason to make an issue of a photo from 2006 would be to suggest he's a bad candidate, bad for the country, and bad for the world. Of course, there are pictures of politicians from last century to last week honoring the countries they visit by wearing the traditional garb, look at Bush in Africa or holding hands with the Saudis, for instance -- but the reason for focusing attention on Obama isn't to show what a great diplomat he is, is it?
- Ridgeliner7, on 02/26/2008, -1/+10The reason they made an issue of it, was wanting to perpetuate idea of Obama being Muslim. And so it goes.....;-)
- cranium, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4It's not just that, she's also clearly playing the race card again.
- Ridgeliner7, on 02/26/2008, -1/+10The reason they made an issue of it, was wanting to perpetuate idea of Obama being Muslim. And so it goes.....;-)
- jkbowman, on 02/26/2008, -4/+6In other words, they're guilty as charged.
- jbdobd, on 02/26/2008, -3/+23truly amazing. and these are the people who would be running the White House if she was elected? Holy crap. Now I'm scared.
- jbdobd, on 02/26/2008, -3/+3(meaning the brilliant minds who are running her campaign - just to clarify my comment)
- buhbyebot, on 02/26/2008, -6/+1We get it. It's about as scary or more so than when she was first "lady" with her husband.
- tgc1, on 02/26/2008, -1/+4You're scared NOW? Where have you been the last 8 years?!
- EntropyFan, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1You want to be scared? Just look around here Digg is becoming McCarthyism at its finest.
Any proof her campaign released the photo? No, just proven guilty because the mob says so.
This is what America is becoming.- rotten777, on 02/26/2008, -0/+1The people reporting on the photo said it was from a Clinton staffer. They don't deny it. That's pretty good proof there.
- icantbecool, on 02/26/2008, -69/+5I don't see a problem with the submission of the picture. If Obama can't stand the "snipes" now, there is no way he could ever withstand the republican parties next generation Swift Boat. Obama is Fcuked. Looks like Obama is pulling the race card agian. What's next he's going to learn to fly planes?
- vibrokatana, on 02/26/2008, -0/+16Hmm, I remember burying you the other day, guess I get to do it again :P

- vade79, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Obama isn't the one pulling the race card. The Clintons are making it look like he is pulling the race card, and gets the desired effect, although it backfired in South Carolina. In this case they get a picture released and Obama calls them out on trying to evoke race/etc. Then the Clinton camp responded in a sleight-of-hand move saying that he shouldn't be ashamed of it, which he never said. So, how exactly is this him pulling the race card?
Also, if was gonna get swift boated he wouldn't have responded at all. Kerry got swift-boated cause he would never acknowledge it was happening. If Obama said nothing he would be getting swift-boated.. - petrodollar, on 02/26/2008, -6/+2Better pilots: 9/11 hijackers who hit their target or McCain who got his ass shot down by a bunch of dinks?
- beloitpiper, on 02/26/2008, -0/+3I've definitely read this verbatim before...
- acroyear2, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4It's like someone coughing and saying "He's black!" and when Obama addresses that issue he's playing the race card? Your delusional.
buried
- sonofabeast, on 02/26/2008, -74/+1It's interesting that Obama has a problem wearing American flag pin, but none wearing Muslim garb when visiting the motherland. I don't care if he drapes himself in an American flag, it means nothing to me. He's still CFR socialist vermon.
- jerryparid, on 02/26/2008, -0/+39Hello Bush Supporter/Neocon/Racist Republican, on behalf of Digg, I would to tell you to go ***** yourself.
- petrodollar, on 02/26/2008, -4/+6Worse: a ron paul fanboi.
- wildone71, on 02/26/2008, -15/+1Ahhh, the progressive party's perfect example. So genial and accepting of all people. I also love the word "neocon", such a buzz word these days. It's so funny that it's a pejorative to the liberal masses, but to the intelligent people on the right it doesn't really do anything for us. Basically, neocon is true. Many of us have come to the party after the swingin' 90's and don't have a problem with "neocon". Just the same as if I called you a liberal fascist. You wouldn't have any problem with that would you? Since that's what liberals are at ground level...
- skinkaid, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9neocon = failed ideas resulting in disaster
- skinkaid, on 02/26/2008, -0/+9neocon = failed ideas resulting in disaster

- thebellmaster1x, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Dude, he's not in the CFR. Where the hell are you getting this information? Because he has a bio on their website? They have bios of LOTS of people who aren't members.

Is it just me, or are the interwebs a little prejudiced towards Hilary? I haven't seen a single thing on Digg that's said anything bad about Obama. I mean, he can't be THAT perfect.- MikeSD34, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6His gun control policy makes me sad (too restrictive).
Is that good, or does it have to be something mean and vindictive?- Nanite, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2Gun control is a wedge issue. Republicans know they can always raise the gun control issue to get their constituency rilled up. But the truth is, not EVERYONE should have a gun. Putting controls on gun ownership may be a slippery slope, but letting anyone off the streets buy an assault rifle is just as ridiculous, and that's the only situation gun nuts will support. You have to compromise on this issue so that the repubs don't have the chance to sway you with soon-to-be-broken promises about loosening gun ownership laws. It's a non-issue that should be overlooked in favor of the more important issues like Iraq, the economy, and goverment waste spending. These are more important issues in my mind, and should be given more weight, gun control... I'm not worried about now. Let's get the current tyrants out of Washington first, then we'll debate that.
- skinkaid, on 02/26/2008, -2/+7He's not perfect, no politician is, but at least he's not complaining about stupid ***** every. freekin. day.
- goomba323, on 02/26/2008, -2/+11I'll give you my honest opinion. The whole "experience" isn't a good thing this campaign. So far McCain and Hillary have had things from their past come up to bite them in their ass while Obama gets smeared for using a line or 2 from a political friend who helps with speech ideas and his wife stupidly misspeaking saying she is "for the first time" proud of her country. The Obama allegations just aren't as deep as the allegations against McCain and Hillary and after years in the spotlight, you tend to get a lot of enemies. Obama is a fresh face with extraordinary charisma and it's hard to try and use the "politics as usual" to bring his character down since he clearly is running a campaign (or at least trying to) that is above the fray.
Now with that said, clearly an Obama supporter won't digg up anti-Obama articles, but the truth is there just aren't as many out there as there are against McCain (even some from within his own party) or Clinton (again, some within her own party). - fwillerup, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0I think Obama is probably a nice guy with his heart in the right place. However, the big question is: how are all his promises going to be financed? I hunted for this on his web site, but nothing. The main problem in the US is the economy, especially government spending. As far as I can tell that will just be made worse by Obama (apart from pulling out from Iraq which should save some). Is he going to raise taxes? By how much?
- MikeSD34, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6His gun control policy makes me sad (too restrictive).
- yellowsnowcone, on 02/26/2008, -6/+16This photo is not a smear. Why is the Obama camp reacting as if this were a smear?
They should just own the photo. It shows he's culturally aware. In my mind, that makes me want to vote for him even more.- MrSkrilla, on 02/26/2008, -2/+5The Obama camp is not upset about the photo, they are upset that Hillary is trying to use the photo as smear. The Obama camp feels that Hillary is disrespecting his heritage by using a photo like to smear him.
Whatever, it will all be over in a few days. I will sure be glad to not have to hear Hillary's ***** bitch mouth anymore.- chrishavel, on 02/26/2008, -5/+3There are three realistic possibilities: 1) Obama released it. 2) Clinton released it. 3) A Republican released it. We have only Drudge's word that it was the Clinton camp. No proof. Neither Obama nor Hillary has much to gain from the fracas, and neither camp is stupid. Neither Clinton nor Obama supporters are thinking critically about the photo's release. They're just knee-jerk defending their camp and attacking the other. What if Door #3 is accurate? Two fer one, if you think on it ...
- aliengoods, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2They're upset because we all know the purpose. That whispers of "Obama is a muslim" will permeate the political landscape and Hillary will win through sheer douchebaggery.
- MrSkrilla, on 02/26/2008, -2/+5The Obama camp is not upset about the photo, they are upset that Hillary is trying to use the photo as smear. The Obama camp feels that Hillary is disrespecting his heritage by using a photo like to smear him.
- da_bradler, on 02/26/2008, -22/+6This is a pretty obvious smear from the Obama campaign. they most likely released the photo themselves so they could smear HIllary, seriously there is no proof that they released the photo and nobody even heard of or saw the photo until the Obama campaign brought it up. The Hillary campaign doesn't need to say they didn't do it because there is no proof and they shouldn't even respond to unfounded accusations .
- yellowsnowcone, on 02/26/2008, -7/+3I agree. This actually serves Obama better than Hilary.
- goomba323, on 02/26/2008, -3/+8I think you underestimate the total lack of judgment and political stragedy that the Clinton campaign has been showing so far this race. It's as if the makers of the titanic and the hindenberg got together to form a super duper ***** of a vehicle.....and that's what Clinton is riding on.
- yellowsnowcone, on 02/26/2008, -7/+3I agree. This actually serves Obama better than Hilary.
- turdblossom1, on 02/26/2008, -9/+2Hillary Clinton is an evil son of a bitch! http://youtube.com/watch?v=rEOjttmqIrc
- underdugg, on 02/26/2008, -3/+5Maybe not. A lot of people will fall for this. Obama has to come out swinging in tomorrow's debate, and have muitple, concise jabs to hit back with. Mark Penn being a neocon corporate shill, for starters. (How would Clinton run her administration, with people like this?)
There are plenty of scandals to choose from -- isn't someone trying server her a subpoena about a illegal fundraisers, right now? - wjackson, on 02/26/2008, -3/+9It looks like Maggie Williams represents money well spent for the Clinton campaign. She's Karl Rove's female counterpart. Give them credit; this volley was artfully served...from the timing to the response.
Keep your chin high, Barack. We know you're better than this. - ampersand2001, on 02/26/2008, -5/+8umm, yeah...I think the fat lady is warming up
- DangerCollie, on 02/26/2008, -4/+9I wonder if they realize that when they act like that, it makes them look sad, desperate and pathetic? If Clinton wants to salvage any future political career she's got to distance herself from this silliness and do it soon.
For Pete's sake lose with some dignity. The Republicans are going to do the same thing this fall and it will be every bit as pathetic and undignified. Although you can't paint all Republicans with the same brush. There are a lot of them as fed up with the party leadership as the rest of us. I think if we could round up the core group and put them in prison, the rest of us could probably get along okay. - cheekdog, on 02/26/2008, -2/+3turn about is fair play...

- soot, on 02/26/2008, -2/+14"If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed."
All we want to know is why it was circulated to news networks. Did they just want to show everyone how good he looked in them? No. - dizturbd2, on 02/26/2008, -2/+10What ever happened to the real issues? Who's going to tax me the least? What about Healthcare? Where's Waldo?
- one7, on 02/26/2008, -2/+1Damn, thanks for the best laugh I've had all day! "Who's going to tax me the least?" being asked in a contest between Obama and Clinton? Does anyone who has done their homework really believe there would be a difference?
- fluxion, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1"taxed up the ass" applies to either. unforunately in the state we're in i think that's inevitable, we're just pushing it off on our kids if we dont step up now. the issue to me is how that money is spent.

- Evanmontegarde, on 02/26/2008, -4/+5The Clinton campaign is just shameful. This isn't a political movement, this is a sad attempt to win votes with lies and deceit.
- omnis, on 02/26/2008, -1/+12I just don't get why Obama's crew cried out over this. They've been pretty smart over Hillary's attacks so far. Instead of calling it an attempt at a smear, they instead should of just said "Yes, this is a picture of me in another country engaging myself in their culture and customs". Yes, Hillary, it IS ok to interact with other people in other countries!
- saska, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2The quotes I've read from the Obama campaign do seem to be stating those facts. They also call attention to the fact that the Drudge report said it came from Clinton's camp, and it's interesting that it took so long -- and that Maggie Williams came out and made a statement earlier in the day without a denial -- for them to say it didn't come from them.
Though I would like to see the entire press release from Obama's campaign, and to date, I haven't.- elijahsnw, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1point taken but if you don't raise any eyebrows people tend to steer the direction of the zeitgeist to their favor.... remember Kerry? Had he spoken up it would have put the ball in his court... doing nothing and "rising above it" in that whole... if you're being bullied just ignore them and they'll go away.. never works...
I think what does work is responding only enough so that you illustrate what everyone already knows.. i.e.... make a bigger point of asking the opposition "why" and "explain yourself" over taking accusatory and indignant tones....
Every confrontation between the two campaigns seems to follow the same basic schema and what comes off is that the Clinton campaign is being railroaded into almost identical responses and the Obama campaign remaining dynamic and unpredictable... 1 day they're on the attack but the attack is controlled and understated and basically true drawing the public's attention to issues that would have become convoluted in a debate.. (NAFTA) the next they're under attack in an overraction from clinton's people but they respond again in an understated manner... (plagarism, picture) then repeat as needed...
As we've seen it works. The whole thing leaves the Clinton campaign looking somewhat irrational and unstable.. It's all a perfect power play designed to make the other side self destruct and leaving them with arguments that may well be valid but are entirely irrelevant.. i think it's interesting that the Clintons are being played like a fiddle here and crying foul over "tactics" but somehow believe that they are more capable of taking on the dirtiest of drity reds.
I guess my point is.... sometimes it buys you some integrity if you call it like it is then let it lie... if it looks like a smear, smells like a smear and acts like one then what is it? It was a proportional response and certainly a far sight from waving around a flyer barking "shame on you hillary"...... Ironically I think this is pretty much the same logic that convinced hillary's team to get her on tv and call him out.... right idea, awful execution.- saska, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1This is why I'd like to read the full statement from his campaign about it -- the one that is being quoted in partial sentences in the news reports.
Don't underestimate the media picking and choosing only the most interesting bits of the campaign's statement, designed to keep people coming back for the next installment. That's true of the media's coverage of EVERY candidate in this election.
- saska, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1This is why I'd like to read the full statement from his campaign about it -- the one that is being quoted in partial sentences in the news reports.

- ToolGuy93, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Obama's team HAD to respond forcefully and immediately to prevent the spread of yet another Swift-boat style whispering campaign. There is already too much "Obama is a Muslim" misinformation out there and for Obama to simply ignore it is stupid. If they had failed to deny the obvious intended implications of the the photo then some people are going to believe it is true that Obama is a closet Muslim. For exactly the same reason, many people have reached the conclusion that the HRC camp did indeed release the picture as Drudge reported, simply because HRC refuses to deny it.
- saska, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1HRC's campaign did deny it, but not until many hours after Maggie Williams made her first statement about it. This leads me to believe that they huddled to find out if there was plausible deniability first, including hammering on the Drudge Report to find out where the e-mail came from and if it could be traced back to them without question.
- saska, on 02/26/2008, -1/+2The quotes I've read from the Obama campaign do seem to be stating those facts. I don't like Hillary either, but let's not jump to conclusions with no facts.- Langford, on 02/26/2008, -3/+6If you read the statement you see that when confronted, they don't deny it. Instead they claim that putting it out isn't wrong and that they shouldn't be called out on it.
- Gwyddyon, on 02/26/2008, -5/+2Who needs facts when you have HOPE that things will CHANGE?
- robds, on 02/26/2008, -3/+16With each passing day, I feel more and more comfortable with the fact that I switched my vote literally at the last minute from Senator Clinton to Senator Obama.

- cambob76, on 02/26/2008, -3/+19The Hillary camp is trying to mind ***** you all with doublespeak and flat-out hypocrisy. They count on people having short memories.

- speakerfordead, on 02/26/2008, -3/+5Oh my God! My stomach hurts from so much spinning. Hillary just keeps digging herself a deeper hole by doing these idiotic stunts.
- Langford, on 02/26/2008, -3/+6When she sent out those pictures, what did she expect? She thought she would appeal to blind racism to scare votes her way? What other motive could she have had? Thats depressing.
- Rodalli, on 02/26/2008, -2/+7Ok, I think this seals it. It's well past time to start ignoring these people. They're the real world equivalent of forum trolls.
- jerryterhorst, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2haha, that's the best description of the actions of the clinton campaign in the past few weeks ive heard yet. the resemblance is uncanny.
- dhjackburton, on 02/26/2008, -3/+4Barack Obama's campaign hinges on his departure from standard Washington politics, such as the fear-mongering of the Bush Administration. By HRC's campaign [in all likelihood] distributing this picture that is clearly meant to evoke fear in the American public by associating Obama with stereotypical turbin wearing terrorists. All she is doing is reinforcing the belief that her presidency would be business as usual.

- needlenosened, on 02/26/2008, -1/+1Hmm...she voted for the Iraq war and she continues to attempt to portray Obama as a Muslim. What does this say of her view of Middle Easterners? Looks a lot like contempt and exploitation as usual.
I just hope Obama wins by such a large margin next week that she can go crawl and hide somewhere with the rest of her corporate fascist genocidal friends. - Comatose51, on 02/26/2008, -2/+2She must take voters like me for granted if she thinks that by winning the Democratic nomination with smear campaign and underhanded tactics would guarantee my vote. McCain is moderate enough that I would consider voting for him. Obviously I want to vote for Obama but I would take McCain if my choice is between McCain and someone who is so underhanded. If I want underhanded, I would vote for Karl Rove. At least he doesn't cry.
