- diggeradoo, on 03/16/2008, -8/+116"When we endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination Jan. 27, we said we had formed our opinions of him during 12 years of scrutiny. We concluded that the professional judgment and personal decency with which he has managed himself and his ambition distinguish him.
Nothing Obama said in our editorial board room Friday diminishes that verdict."- ARC72, on 03/16/2008, -5/+43Barack Obama now has spoken about his ties to Tony Rezko in uncommon detail. That's a standard for candor by which other presidential candidates facing serious inquiries now can be judged.
- RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -26/+9I'm from Chicago and I get the Chicago Tribune newspaper and I can tell you now that the Chicago Tribune will never print a negative word about Barack Obama....they are in the Chicago Democrat political machines back pocket. The story is worthless.
- soot, on 03/16/2008, -5/+14I can tell just by your username that you'll never come here and print a favorable word about him either.
- RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -15/+4True. But you are not going to get the truth about Rezko and Obama from a Chicago Democratic Machine newspaper. And that is a fact.
I even registered as a Democrat and voted for Obama because you don't dare vote as a Republican on the South Side of Chicago....FACT! - RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -14/+4I am a registered Democrat but will never vote for him in the end...and all of my relatives that live on th South Side of Chicago do likewise. You never know if you need something from the City of Chicago and your ward boss will ***** you in the ass if you are a registered republican. This is a fact.
- RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -8/+3Here is an example: The City of Chicago needed a park in the center of the city. All great cities need a park right. So Mayor Daley had his wealthy friends give money to establish a park development project. After some monies were assembled he decided that the City of Chicago would fit the rest of the bill....whatever that meant. Well what it meant was that there was an outstanding cost of $200 million dollars. The news papers and TV have been SILENT! Guess what the City needs a rapid transit bailout of....guess how much. $200 million dollars. Hahahahahaha! The Chicago Rapid Transit Authority (RTA) is bankrupt! Chicago now has the highest sales taxes in the entire country and nobody says anything....the Machine owns the media in Chicago, hook line and sinker.
If you think they are going to ask Barack Obama any tough questions I have a bridge I would like to sell you. - RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -8/+3The initial story was that Rezko raised $125,000 for Obama which he immediately donated. Now it is up to $250,000. It could go even higher and the property deal gave him "a donation" of over $100,000 on the property...I bet it goes to $500,000...and who knows where it will all end..
http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN1 ...
Clinton's aides cited Obama's disclosure that Rezko had raised up to $250,000 for his earlier political campaigns, a higher figure than he previously reported, and called on him to disclose all documents and e-mails about his Rezko dealings.
"It raises questions about Sen. Obama's judgment," Clinton's deputy communications director, Phil Singer, said. "The revelations make clear that Sen. Obama has not always been straight forward about his relationship with Tony Rezko." - 0xception, on 03/16/2008, -2/+6at this point your just talking to yourself... might as well replace your computer with a mirror.

- RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -20/+5And I just want to add...if you think I am kidding then think about Mayor Daley and all of the ***** that is going on in Chicago and how it never comes to his front door. Do you understand what I am saying. The media in Chicago is so Pro Democrat it isn't funny. About the only thing a Democrat couldn't get away with in Chicago would be a gangland killing. They do not call it the Machine for nothing. Read "BOSS" a book about Mayor Daley's father if you are having a hard time getting your head around this subject.

Thats what happens when any reporters ask any real questions to Obama. He walks out of the press conference.
- soot, on 03/16/2008, -5/+14I can tell just by your username that you'll never come here and print a favorable word about him either.
- ARC72, on 03/16/2008, -31/+12Two observations after reading this as well as the Sun-Times version: (1) He could have done this a long time ago, why did he wait so long? (2) Reporters from both papers now say they are satisfied that Obama has answered every outstanding question on Rezko, but what exactly came out of this session that was new? I didn't see anything in either paper that wasn't already common knowledge.
- JasonHears, on 03/16/2008, -4/+23He says at the end that he just didn't realize the best way to deal with this issue, and he erred on the side of caution, and just never talked about it. Now that he feels its a serious question that people want to know they can trust him, he's dealing with it. On the second question, it is nothing new. But it appears that he was able to more clearly articulate his association, and to satisfactorily answer any outstanding questions the reporters had of him. If there was anything new in this, that could have been potentially damning for Obama, we would be hearing about it.
- ARC72, on 03/16/2008, -3/+27It just seems a little odd you know; the press was crying for so long for Obama to "come clean" on Rezko, he spends a couple hours confirming what everyone already knew, and now they say everything's cool. Sounds like they (the press) are finally admitting that there never really was a story in the first place.
- actorboy, on 03/16/2008, -5/+23Interestingly, a reporter from the Chicago Tribune was on CNN at least a month ago saying they had been following this for some time they had found no evidence suggesting illegal activity between Obama and Rezko. Of course, CNN kept running the question of illegal activity without repeating the Tribune's opinion that nothing was there. Pretty sad, really -- going with the negative supposition but ignoring the positive.

- beakerwimp, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3ARC72 - I agree with the point you make in your post: "I didn't see anything in either paper that wasn't already common knowledge". One can only wonder: What new information ARE we looking to hear more detail about? I'm skeptical about Obama's detailed explanation so far. It seems sincere, but people like you are raising a lot of heat and doubt about the situation. You are strongly hinting that there are a ton of Rezko-related details and facts that someone like me hasn't even heard about yet. You also imply that the media is holding back on some key facts. Can you provide some details or a link to some? I tried to read yeslovelife's blog post but it was almost incoherent and riddled with hearsay. The facts that you insinuate you have that the rest of us don't have are very intriguing to me. I'll check this post every few days so I can get all the details as you post them. Thanks in advance.

- usyankee, on 03/16/2008, -4/+1Nearly 100 people were either murdered or committed suicide. Despite much evidence to the contrary, Foster's death was ruled a "suicide." His shoes had no grass or dirt on them despite his alleged walking 700 feet where he was found. The gun was two different guns with 2 different serial #'s on it. Carpet fibers were all over his body as if it were dragged. they never found the bullet despite finding Civil War bullets in the area, the gu powder did not belong to the gun in his hand, and the powder was not in the areas that should have been if HE were holding the gun. His car keys were nowhere to be find, not in his car, not in his pockets...until AFTER two people from the White House visited his body in the morgue. His wife's stepson had info regarding it, and HE committed "suicide" as well. Many, many suicides were NOT suicides. No freaking way.
- nicktx, on 03/16/2008, -0/+2From Wikipedia: There have been three official investigations into Foster's death, all of which concluded that he committed suicide.[14]
The first was by the United States Park Police in 1993, in whose jurisdiction the original investigation fell. Due to Foster's position in the White House, the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation. Investigations by a coroner and Independent Counsel Robert B. Fiske, in a 58-page report released in 1994, also concluded that Foster had committed suicide.[9] Conspiracy theories of a cover-up still persisted. After a three-year investigation, Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr[15][16] released a report in 1997 also concluding that the death was a suicide.[9]
In addition, two investigations by the U.S. Congress also found that Foster committed suicide.[9]

- 0xception, on 03/16/2008, -2/+8when did he lie? source?
- Malevolant, on 03/16/2008, -9/+2He lies daily about not knowing that his mentor/preacher, of 20 years, is an outright racist. Look all over for proof of this.
- 0xception, on 03/16/2008, -3/+6welp that had NOTHING to do with the current topic at hand of Rezko... but whatever...
can i ask you, have you ever meet his pastor? other then some comments you've seen on youtube do you have any idea what he's like as a person? have you heard his side/defense of his comments? I'm not defending him, but he's clearly stated in the past that he has not been a mentor to obama, and that he has in no way shaped obama (even though he would have liked to have credit for that) but he's been clear about that BEFORE this whole issue came up.
but even with that i know people who i have been associated with for a long time, and then one day i talk hear something that sounds a bit racist, and it does in fact offend me since my wife is half black/half Hispanic. that doesn't mean i'm never going to be his friend anymore... it simply means my friend has a fault, and i would rather continue to be his friend and try and show him his wrongs and help him see that he's wrong then to run away and say NO NEVER talking to him again.- Malevolant, on 03/16/2008, -8/+1You are beyond ***** ignorant. You make every excuse you can for Obama and it's sickening. How does it feel to be beyond a sycophant for someone who's just reinventing the word politician, this isn't change either? It is amazing the lengths people like you go to, to justify your support for a man that you know nothing about. You people speak as if you are in his inner circle and know it all. The truth is you only know what his massive marketing campaign, financed by people like yourself, is selling you. All of you should be embarrassed beyond belief. Sad, yet normal here. If he was white you'd be calling for his head, but it's Obama, so he gets a free pass.
- 0xception, on 03/16/2008, -1/+5There really is no need for me to respond to your comment because you make a fool of yourself for me. but either way... Good question, if obama was white would we still support him? lets see, do you know of another president who is white, extremely charismatic, and was criticized for his religion?
look you can keep your pessimistic cynical world view to yourself, I'm a realist, I know he's not going to change the world by himself, in fact i don't expect him to nor want him to. I've watched Obama's political career back before he entered the US senate. I've always been impressed by him. does he have somewhat of an over hyped fallowing? yes. but those people are not ignorant, at least not anymore then you are. They are just passionate. But if you can point out this truly PERFECT candidate in the race for the US president then please by all means do because i would love to see them. Obama's the best viable candidate in the race by far. is he perfect? NO. does he think he's perfect? NO and that is important. the other VERY important aspect of his campaign has been the dedication to transparency in government... without this the citizans of the nation can not fully hold their government responsible for its actions and corruption and monitor it's actions.
Now you can throw around all your personal ***** about Obama you want, like his pastor, shady people he's meet in the past, his race, his religion, but in the end your just a monkey flinging crap.

Here's some of the early lies.
Now I didn't go through each of the Q&A's from 2006 and compare to this article but check this:
"Obama and Rezko have been friends since 1990, and Obama said the Wilmette businessman raised as much as $60,000 for him during his political career. After Rezko's indictment, Obama donated $11,500 to charity--a total that represents what Rezko contributed to the senator's federal campaign fund."
Seem familiar? Everytime some reporter digs, the amount raised gets higher (it's now $250,000+) and the amount he donates to charity gets greater. Note that this was from 11/2006 almost a year and a half ago.- Stevanoski, on 03/16/2008, -2/+2$250k +, when I went to bed last night it was at $100,000. Wonder if Hillary has any futures contracts on this?
- 0xception, on 03/16/2008, -2/+8when did he lie? source?
- horizonsonfire, on 03/16/2008, -2/+7Please. I despise Hillary as much as the rest of digg, but this is ridiculous. At dinners with presidents and ex-presidents, everyone gets to take their picture with the President and first lady. I have a picture of my parents standing with George H.W. Bush and his wife, but that doesn't imply any kind of relationship.
- snowblindnz, on 03/16/2008, -7/+4god what a horrible page layout. the story is less than one 6th of the page width after the first 2 paragraphs.. what the hell is the point of making it so thin?!
- LordVance, on 03/16/2008, -2/+3I was thinking the same thing - I believe they missed the point of the 3 column layout. There's nothing wrong with having text float around an image or two, but it's not really the place to put 16,000 links to related stories, and pictures, and all that crap.
- jakkyl, on 03/16/2008, -2/+3It makes the story look longer. In turn it projects the image that Obama is laying everything out on the table. The 'effect' seemed to work judging by the reception (or in this case deception) that is prevalent on this board.
- gothicform, on 03/16/2008, -8/+11Everytime I read one of these stories I think "wow, but he seems too good to be true." Please let him be the real deal! We need more people like him in the world if he really is.
- jakkyl, on 03/16/2008, -2/+4The Golden Rule to life. If something seems too good to be true, it is.
- hamobu, on 03/16/2008, -10/+7Obama really handles himself well. The problem is that all Obama seems to come under a closer scrutiny than McCain, and Hillary. As a politician, Obama has to meet a lot of people. Some of those people may be unwholesome, and Obama can't afford to go into lenghty explanations over everyone he had come in contact with and who subsequently did something or said something wrong.
- nicktx, on 03/16/2008, -8/+5This isn't about some random people he's met as politician. This is about the people closest to him - a personal friend of 18 years and devout fund raiser, a pastor who married him and baptized his children, and his wife who was never proud of her country until he started running for President. He does handle himself pretty well most of the time but he's only now starting to receive the same scrutiny everyone else has been enduring for months. Admit it, the press has been in love with him until very recently.
- avidlinuxuser, on 03/16/2008, -3/+7I have friends I meet with every day, and I'm not aware of half the stuff they do when I'm not around. You expect Obama to be aware of what people he meets over breakfast 5 times a year are doing. As for the rest, that's unimportant. Most of the our government officials' pastors likely held racist ideologies in the past especially those coming from souther protestant background.
As for his wife's comment, can you truly say that we have done anything great in the past 20 years? Tearing down the soviet union was great and all, but our efforts led to funding Islamic fundamentalists. Intervening in the conflicts surrounding serbia was great, but it seems there isn't a real good side in the conflicts. They each house sins that could be considered unforgivable. As to domestic policy, it seems the vitriol surrounding politics has only increased. If she's saying she's proud because voters are backing someone who does not engage in such practices and believes in unity, I could see how a case could be made that she is proud for the first time in her adult life. Hint: She was 18 in 1982. You know the beginning of the Reagan era. - hamobu, on 03/16/2008, -2/+4nicktx, you say that Obama is only not receiving scrutiny that everyone else receives. I do not remember this much ballyhoo during the whole Clinton Kazahstan uranium fiasco. Let's not even talk about all those other earlier Clinton scandals.
As for what Obama's wife and minister said, it pails in comparison to some things that John McCain himself has said. John McCain is always bashing "Islamofascism" - which is in line with people who endorse him and who claim that USA is at war with Islam. You will not hear much from the media about this, But the comment from Obama's wife (which is probably just a faux pas on her part) will play repeatedly for many months to come. - freexe, on 03/16/2008, -2/+1Hillary Clinton's husband cheated on her and lied in a court of law.
- Ranvier, on 03/16/2008, -0/+3He said when he was in the pews, he did not hear the types of words that were spoken by his pastor, and had he heard such words, he would have left the church. What a bad guy right?
His wife was proud of all the participation in the election, that comment was taken out of context. How horrible!
Anything else, chief?
- avidlinuxuser, on 03/16/2008, -3/+7I have friends I meet with every day, and I'm not aware of half the stuff they do when I'm not around. You expect Obama to be aware of what people he meets over breakfast 5 times a year are doing. As for the rest, that's unimportant. Most of the our government officials' pastors likely held racist ideologies in the past especially those coming from souther protestant background.
- usyankee, on 03/16/2008, -2/+4We do need to be reminded in this sudden ideology of perfection, life is not lived in a vacuum. We all have someone that is connected to us in some way that has some lapses in judgment.
- PerfectTommy, on 03/16/2008, -13/+19Dear Mrs. Clinton,

- RRJackson, on 03/16/2008, -3/+1I'm in the U.S. population and I'm a Democrat and I not only voted for Clinton in the California primary, but I support her continued campaign. So you're really only speaking for yourself and a few other first-time voters who've fallen for Obama's *****.
- Railz, on 03/16/2008, -1/+3You talk of ***** then you support Clinton.
Well you are from Cali, so its forgivable.

- nicktx, on 03/16/2008, -13/+7This article is about the Chicago Tribune circling the wagons around Obama. It starts as factual and ends as blatant fanboy-ism trying to absolve their homeboy from his ties to shady individuals. The more we find out about the people closest to Obama, the more concerned I get that something will come out and blow his campaign out of the water and we'll be stuck with McCain for 4 years.
- RepubOperative, on 03/16/2008, -8/+6When the cover blows off of Rezko it will come straight from the court system....NOT the Chicago newspapers which are owned by the Chicago Democratic Machine. The truth will only come from the court system.....if you are lucky. They are trying to control that too.
- ZenMojo, on 03/16/2008, -7/+2So there's nothing there with Rezko and we now know that Obama's a Christian. Unfortunately, now everyone thinks that he's a black guy who lived in Chicago for 20 years...how do we answer that?
- solarisom, on 03/16/2008, -10/+10It's a huge political risk to draw attention to your relationship with a man like Rezko, and the fact that Obama took that risk makes me that much more proud of the man I hope becomes our president.
- dball48, on 03/16/2008, -9/+2yea because nobody knew he had any kind of relationship with rezko before this, that was really big of him to address this issue for no particular reason.
- brinewr, on 03/16/2008, -8/+3It's about TIME we had a political figure who was as above board as Obama! PLEASE, God. I know you don't exist, but make Obama our next President anyway!!!
- oldgal, on 03/16/2008, -4/+4You can choose open and inclusive type leadership or secretive and exclusive type leadership (aka Bush/Rove/Cheney style). Take your pick.

- usyankee, on 03/16/2008, -4/+1President Clinton endangered Our National Security by giving China secrets in exchange for money for his re-election in 1996. He argued that by doing this, China's missiles did not aim at an American child, not one, not one, not a one. (think in terms of his Monica L. defenses and how he scouted around what the definition of "sexual relations" and "is" is). Well, he's right, they did not have "one not one" missile aimed at an American Child. He had MORE than one. At least 5 direct, and more indirect missiles. It's on the net in many places. I need to do more research on this Brown guy who committed the usual alleged "suicide" during Clinton's administration. He was the guy on the Commerce part of the deal that President Clinton gave the power to that DECREASED the safety of the US.
- renegadeafk, on 03/16/2008, -0/+1What?
- Spoomeister, on 03/16/2008, -4/+3The sad thing here is, in the long run, that kind of transparency may work against him. Off the top of my head, 2 scenarios:
- Being that open, direct and detailed may make other politicians and powerful people reluctant to discuss things with him, knowing that potentially it could get spelled out somewhere else later. Which brings up an interesting philosophical point, about how much a politician needs to be able to "play the game" to be effective.
- With such a high bar set, it makes it a lot harder for him to avoid questions. His silence speaks a lot louder, when he's this open about other things. I can just see how the Repubclintons could twist this around: "Why aren't you being as forthcoming about [X] as you were about Rezko? [X] is at least as important as that was...", etc.
I'm an Obama supporter. I'm not saying there's any huge problem or obstacle here. Not even putting him on a pedestal; I'm sure he has his share of dirty laundry, judgement calls I'd disagree with, etc. It's just fascinating to contemplate this. - jakkyl, on 03/16/2008, -9/+5wow.....this whole obama thing really is becoming a religion. right before our eyes...
- Monty2, on 03/16/2008, -6/+4Only to goofballs on digg.. Apparently some atheists need SOMETHING to worship. And apparently the lower intelligent ones go for kooks like obama and ron paul.
- dinot, on 03/16/2008, -1/+2Yeah, we Obama supporters worship at his feet, live in the air he breathes, and are soooooo blindly devoted to him, right? That's why his supporters like the Chicago Tribune are actually asking him tough questions regarding his Rezko dealings. When are Hillary's supporters going to ask her about her foreign experience claims? Or about releasing her tax returns? Or about how she claims to be against special interests yet receives more money from them than any other candidate?
So why don't you just ***** off and stop raining on our parade. There are plenty of other topics on Digg.

- Pherdnut, on 03/19/2008, -0/+1Not likely. It's all they had. Too bad Chicago's largest liberal AND conservative paper won't be giving them any real ammo.

It's nice to see a politician who can appreciate the value of blunt honesty and an ability to concede mistakes without sounding like a total puss. There's really no tactic or spin that these things can't smash to pieces.
