- giantdouche, on 02/16/2008, -70/+12If you read deeply into conservative philosophy, you'll soon discover the WHY behind most of their positions, including religion. Do the ends justify the means? I'm not sure; that's up to you.
Hint: they believe that humanity is essentially flawed. (e.g. small gov't, because it's run by HUMANS.)- Napoleone, on 02/16/2008, -6/+25I'm neither conservative nor liberal, but I do find you statement extremely ironic.
One of the primary reasons for why self-identified liberals seek government intervention in the way of regulation is precisely because they know humanity IS essentially flawed.
A government with too much power is far more dangerous too its people than just about any outside force. If you don't believe me, just go ask the people of Burma or Cuba or China, or those who lived under Pinochet's Chile, East Germany or the Soviet Union.- pintomp3, on 02/16/2008, -0/+20we need more parties, or to end parties. financially, neither party is conservative. conservative has come to mean only socially conservative. republicans (most of them) call themselves conservatives because they talk about tax cuts and cutting social spending. but they borrow money and increase military spending. the two party system ensures that we have no options but to vote for two sides of the same corporate owned coin.
- LocalDocal, on 02/16/2008, -1/+2So, to make it short, both the conservatives/liberals believe humanity is flawed, but they just have a different approach to how to solve this problem.
- Plinkotic, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Both of which, regardless of intentions, usually end up being 'piss in the PC and see if it'll turn on' type solutions.
- jebudas, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4Ironic that the Republicans want to limit government's power but at the same time push the Patriot Act.
- Fizban140, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1No it isn't ironic at all, they are called Neo-cons, they don't believe in the old conservative philosophy but they are still Republicans.
- PeppermintPig, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1Which is to say conservative has many meanings, and is therefore confusing to reference without some context.
Even many religious conservatives supporting the GOP would see morality regulated by the government to some degree.... Making decisions for other people against their will, whether it comes from the 'right' or 'left', is wrong. Which makes me wonder to what extent Barkley supports Christianity, to the point that people would have the free will to make choices, to be virtuous of their own accord.
- notque, on 02/16/2008, -6/+24That's the propaganda. Sure, if you read their propaganda that's what they say. You can decide to read their own discussions instead.
They are very clear. They want small government to protect the "minority of the opulent against the majority". That's a direct quote from James Madison.
They are strictly concerned with keeping an upper class that has the majority of the wealth, and keeping the minority out of things. That's clear as day, and you can wrap any kind of ***** around it, like humans are essentially flawed, but that always means the majority.
You're essentially flawed, so WE have to run the country. You aren't smart enough, you're a bunch of dummies. We know what's best for you, and if you take over you'll take away our wealth.
It's all *****, and the majority of Americans see through it, although don't know what to do about it.- bobcat7407, on 02/17/2008, -3/+1How does small government protect the "minority of the opulent against the majority"? Smaller government means less power so how would they protect them more? The protection comes when you have large government because they can influence so much more. What you're saying doesn't make sense to me. If there's a way to make it more clear please do, thanks.
- gernblansted, on 02/16/2008, -0/+10"Hint: they believe that humanity is essentially flawed. (e.g. small gov't, because it's run by HUMANS.)"
The irony of this is small Governement usually leads to private sector involvement in running day to day necessities - and the private sector is run by humans as well, specifically people who's primary responsibility (if it's a Corporate entity which it always is) is making a profit, not serving society - people who are answerable to investors, not the stake holders who make up society. And of course, BIG Government becomes a self serving bureaucracy (as in Department of Homeland Security and their TSA thugs who are always making people do ever stupider things to travel while stealing their electronics and other valuables they force them to check at the ticket counter).- AbsurdParadox, on 02/16/2008, -4/+3One can never serve "society". There is no such thing as "the general public".
I mean no insult, but many of your statements show that you simply do not understand the basics of capitalism. For example, profit incentive is what created all these great things we have today. And to think that a Company is not answerable to their customers is ludicrous.- subscreet, on 02/16/2008, -3/+3Amen. People are so quick to blame capitalism and "corporations" (i.e., a vague evil) while ignoring all the great things that profit incentive has done.
- revisrev, on 02/16/2008, -0/+5I think the problem many people have with privatization is that many, not all, but many companies have a Board of Directors and an Executive Staff that is concerned with only one group of stakeholders, those being shareholders. They lose sight of the other stakeholders, those being their customers, their suppliers, and society as a whole. A corporation is supposed to be an organization that makes money so that it can continue to exist, and instead many have become organizations that exist to make money.
- AbsurdParadox, on 02/16/2008, -4/+3One can never serve "society". There is no such thing as "the general public".

- Jpotts12, on 02/17/2008, -3/+5Are you implying that Charles Barkley is an idiot? He doesn't seem like a genius or anything, but I don't think he's an idiot.
- s1mph0ny, on 02/17/2008, -3/+4And you'd be wrong.
- shamanlife, on 02/17/2008, -0/+5It is a small sign of hope when one gets to see someone waking up, and speaking out about it.

- Frostman3D, on 02/16/2008, -7/+32I know Charles, he'd make a fine Governor. And while I'm Pro-Life, he'd still get my vote.
- ICSU, on 02/16/2008, -16/+6Are you pro-life or anti-choice?
Those are completely separate things, even though people against choice try to label themselves as pro-life.- s1mph0ny, on 02/17/2008, -3/+8Are you anti-life or pro-death? See I can call you names too.
- Synova, on 02/17/2008, -1/+4Well played.
- s1mph0ny, on 02/17/2008, -3/+8Are you anti-life or pro-death? See I can call you names too.
- StarlessKnight, on 02/16/2008, -8/+14"Pro-Life" is a misnomer. Pro-Choice people are not Anti-Life. They do not want to kill people. And even if they were to accept that a first trimester, or recently conceived 'baby' were a person, they do not want to give people the right to abort after birth. They don't want vigilante justice. They aren't necessary Pro-Capital Punishment. They aren't necessarily warmongers. It isn't Pro-Life and Anti-Life, and that's what "Pro-Life" breaks it down to. You're either for Life, or you're not for Life.
Are you Pro-Abortion or Anti-Abortion? Do you accept any exceptions if Anti-Abortion? Do you impose any restrictions if Pro-Abortion?- sleepwalkers, on 02/16/2008, -6/+5Honestly, what does it matter to you why they believe what they do?
- ScottMitchell, on 02/17/2008, -1/+7If they are the ones making policy, it may directly affect him and his imaginary g/f.
- sleepwalkers, on 02/16/2008, -6/+5Honestly, what does it matter to you why they believe what they do?
- pkonink, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1The best way to be pro-life is to simply not get an abortion or make sure to not get someone pregnant who would want to get an abortion. Lead by example and never turn away a needy child - that is what pro-life should be. Not hatred of planned parenthood.
- ICSU, on 02/16/2008, -16/+6Are you pro-life or anti-choice?
- styleomatic, on 02/16/2008, -11/+31Well done Charles. While Christians are chewing on Charles' concepts, perhaps they should study the part of the bible that says "thou shalt not kill" before backing pro-war politians. IMO when you do that, it makes you killer by proxy..... sleep well hypocrites!!
- plasticmind, on 02/17/2008, -6/+4Guess what else? I know Christians who think cops should carry guns. GASP! I hope they only shoot marshmallow hearts!!!1!
- diggrific, on 02/17/2008, -3/+4
- Gunite, on 02/17/2008, -2/+3I have heard the phrase "Thou shalt not kill" uttered by Christians at least 100 times in my life time (being subjected to the teachings of Christianity). I have never heard "you shall not murder", although I don't doubt that it is translated as such in some version of the unbend-able truth that is the Bible.
I assume you are a Christian. Try this experiment with your friends at church: Ask them to recite the 10 commandments, how many recite your version "you shall not murder."?
Funny how a principal so basic can get so messed up. And that is precisely why Charles is so majorly pissed off at his fellow Christians.- styleomatic, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2Since when is going into a foreign country, especially without a declaration of war from congress and based on lies, "defending yourself?" This justifies the taking of innocent human lives too? It's fine if we do it in the name of Christianity.... look up "The Crusades." But, if you do it in the name of any other religion, it's evil.
As a Christian, I worked in a Christian based organization for over 3 years. I've worked and gone to many different churches. I know this much, if Jesus came down from the sky with his arms outstretched with love, he'd want to kick pro-war American asses instead.
All I need to know is this, THERE IS A GOD, AND I'M NOT IT. Religion is about control and if you like it, fine. I don't think God the Creator, could give two ***** about religion. - Gunite, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2Then let me make my argument very plainly. The original poster calls Christians hypocrites, siting "thou shalt not kill" as his example. You argue that the translation is not accurate, implying that with the correct translation there is no hypocrisy. I say most Christians learn, memorize, and use the "thou shalt not kill" translation, therefore they are hypocrites.
Two further points. "Thou shalt not kill" is a better version than the one you cite. Yours might as well read "You will not kill unless you have reason to do so" which is completely useless. I guess that's another argument.
Also, take a look at the Vatican web site. Apparently the Pope prefers "You will not kill" - diggrific, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1
- styleomatic, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2 How do you know how much knowledge I have? Kinda presumptuous dont cha think? Here's a news flash, I got most of my knowledge through FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE. You judge other Christians as lazy who "use the old translation." THIS is the ORIGINAL point Barkley was making... judgemental Christians are ruining this country. They do it by putting everything in a framework of religion... including war.
I left the church and I'm closer to God than ever. Partially because I 'm not afraid of God like I used to be. God is an equal opportunity deity.... he loves all. What about the Oriental folks... where Jesus got some of his teachings from. Are they "going to hell?" If so, they have been going there for thousands of years before Christ was ever mentioned. I'm sick and tired of regulations and translations guiding me... the truth is the truth. Here's a good one:
Turn away others who don't agree with your positions..... like "one must be saved".....or if you don't agree with the war, you' hate America. Oriental folks... where Jesus got much of his teachings from. Are they "going to hell?" If so, they have been going there for thousands of years before Christ was ever mentioned.
For you not to defend the Iraqi War is a cop out.
Thou shalt not kill.... Cite your translation sources..... Moses? Jesus? God? Who? Where do you get your info? - Gunite, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1I say your version is useless because the word "murder" is very complicated (in this context) and itself open to interpretation. What is God really trying to say? That I should not kill except under certain conditions, such as self defense? May I kill to defend my resources or mental health? May I kill after the fact as punishment? May I kill preemptively if I believe I will be harmed?
If God appeared before me and said "You will not kill any human being or I will send you to hell for eternity" and then vanished, I would not have any difficulty interpreting that. If everybody followed that rule it would work perfectly. And even if someone killed me, and I had the opportunity to defend myself at the cost of their life, I would not, because I would have the knowledge that I was obeying God.
- styleomatic, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2 How do you know how much knowledge I have? Kinda presumptuous dont cha think? Here's a news flash, I got most of my knowledge through FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE. - styleomatic, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1Ahhh, semantics.... bible translations.... If I remember correctly, it's ok to handle snakes too, right? You can try to twist this thing any way you want. Have you ever seen someone get shot? I have... it didn't solve a damn thing. If defending yourself means killing civilians, I especially don't want any part of it. "Thou shalt not kill" PERIOD.

I agree that he's a basketball player and what the hell does he know about poltics... but he's been retired for a while... plenty of time to read and learn. And you know what? What do any these scumbag professional polticians who keep getting elected into office know that's so special? They know how to promote themselves and steal from the people. Charles already has plenty of money. At least you won't have to worry as much about him stealing and looting and taking bribes like your typical "public servant."

- poopz, on 02/16/2008, -18/+4Is it me or does every single black person who appears on a news program enthusiastically support Obama? Even if they know nothing about his politics? The other day on CNN, they had a random black sportscaster from ESPN on the show to talk about how Obama was "awesome". That exemplified what I was thinking.
I mean obviously I understand why they would support him, but its gotten to the point that I just roll my eyes when they bring a random NBA player or ESPN anchor onto the news to talk about Obama is the best. I'm not sayin... I'm just sayin.- ricky125, on 02/16/2008, -2/+10Hey poolz, why don't you show all these black people that you are not bound by skin color, and vote for Obama. That'll show them.
- JointVenture, on 02/16/2008, -1/+5Obama is 50% white.
why does everyone forget that?- pauleric, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Everyone doesn't forget that. But in the US he is tpically considered black because of historical racism and the "one drop" idea. And really, very few blacks in the US are of 100% African ancestry. So, in context, to be black in America doesn't mean the same thing as to be black (or whatever word they use locally) in Africa.
- vade79, on 02/16/2008, -1/+6You're the guy that doesn't like a band after they "get big" too, aren't you? I notice this about america as a whole, once something gets big, good or not, it must be shot down after a certain period of time for some reason...sucks.
- celotil, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1They call that "Tall Poppy Syndrome" around where I live. As soon as something gets big and popular then it automatically must be cut down.
- poopz, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1I actually do like Obama and I'm going to vote for him. It just seems blacks are almost exclusively voting for him and any black correspondent supports Obama. It's an observation
- alw111, on 02/16/2008, -1/+4This interview was on CNN last night. Magic Johnson was on immediately before him to show support for Hillary.
- Arcesius, on 02/17/2008, -1/+2I'm not so sure I want to consider all the black support for Obama as a prejudiced/racist vote. Perhaps they're just hoping that a black candidate will have more sympathy for their plights than a white guy/gal.
- woodsjransom, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6yrs. - and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress www.thomas.loc.gov, but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more substantive.
16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11 18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the fact's straight from the Senate Record
Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.
During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.
He's not just a talker. He's a doer. Pass it on....It's impressive
- woodsjransom, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.
- poopz, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1Don't get me wrong, Obama is my favorite candidate and I'll be voting for him when the time comes around. It just seems like blacks are voting almost exclusively for Obama and the whites are divvying up votes almost equally. The numbers don't lie...
- nygrissplz, on 02/16/2008, -4/+30One of the smartest things I've ever heard from a basketball player, ever--My feelings exactly. I was watching this on TV when he said it and couldn't have been happier.
- malman4, on 02/16/2008, -7/+1Doesn't take a lot to make you happy, does it?
- plasticmind, on 02/17/2008, -3/+1Christians need to be forgiving? There can be no forgiveness unless something wrong has been done to be forgiven. What's everyone doing that he needs to ask forgiveness for?
- shamanlife, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I also happen to be watching this on tv. I smiled, I couldn't believe someone was allowed to speak their mind about a bit of the missing truth in msm. The emperor has no clothes!
- digihoffa, on 02/16/2008, -9/+2pwnd gg!!
- SOS84, on 02/16/2008, -3/+43You gotta love Sir Charles. He gets ripped, a lot, but he always speaks his mind and has no idea of what PC is, nor does he care. As usual, he is pretty much on the spot.
- ScottMitchell, on 02/17/2008, -0/+7He's like that crazy old grandfather, only cooler. And slightly faster than Dick Bavetta.
- BECoole, on 02/18/2008, -1/+1I would say that promoting homosexual behavior is pretty PC.
- littlebylittle, on 02/16/2008, -17/+125As a Christian Progressive I have to applaud Charles for this statement. The reason I'm a Christian is because of Christ, pure and simple. His life and the things he said were radical. That's why they killed him.
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
-- Christ
I don't see the NeoCon Platform of Power, Greed and Hate lining up with what Christ taught.
I don't judge other men's souls though. That's up to God.- benkrembs, on 02/16/2008, -28/+4Let me see if I get this right...
1. You conclude that "NeoCon Platform of Power, Greed and Hate" doesn't practice what Christ taught
2. But you don't judge anybody
See the discrepancy there? Probably not. Dunno why I wasted my time.
Oh, last thing: Anybody that refers to republications as the "NeoCon Platform of Power, Greed and Hate" is clearly unable to intelligently debate the merits of politics. You're one of those annoying kids that loves being patted on the head by other diggers for having an opinion that's "cool". Form your own opinions; and lose the over dramatic capitalization.- argonplatypus, on 02/16/2008, -2/+17There's a line between judging and stating the obvious...
- Bersy, on 02/16/2008, -2/+15Everything I've ever read on digg makes me wonder what planet you're from to consider a bold proclamation of ones christian beliefs and even quoting scripture to be a "cool" position to take here... I could say you're one of those "annoying kids" that looks for any possible hole in other peoples statements to criticize them... whether that's true or not, only you know for sure. Chew on that a while.
- magus_melchior, on 02/16/2008, -0/+15Let's look at it this way, benkrembs:
littlebylittle is saying that because we (indirectly) elect the President, his administration is accountable to us, and rightly so. He said he doesn't judge other people's souls, so he won't say anything like "Dick Cheney is going to burn in hell." But he can call into question the actions of his chosen leaders, because he is given the freedom to do so. - Arcesius, on 02/17/2008, -3/+2You're the kind of Christian I like, because I don't think you're a hypocrite. It's pretty damn funny that despite the fact Yeshua came and tore apart the churches of his time for worshipping a god outside of themselves, what did they do after he died? Built up the same ***** "churches", just in his name this time. (And I'm not a christian, since I don't believe he's the only great teacher. But I definitely think he was the *****). Digg me down, though, since I can't believe that I'm in the digg mainstream with my opining. =/
- sinurgy, on 02/16/2008, -7/+24I don't think I've ever dugg up a "Christian" comment but this was actually deserving!!
- ICSU, on 02/16/2008, -20/+5That's just plagiarized Buddha, The Golden Rule, common sense and some other philosophies.
- Synova, on 02/17/2008, -0/+3I'm sure they wouldn't care as long as the message gets through.
- plasticmind, on 02/17/2008, -16/+2This is absolute foolishness.
Matthew 7:1 says that we aren't supposed to judge, but that certainly needs to be understood in it's context. If Jesus didn't want people judging at all, why would he talk about people going to Hell? Stop pretending to care about what Jesus says to promote your agenda. Either accept it all or call Him a rotten scoundrel.- Saiing, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12People don't send other people to hell. God does.
You don't need to understand anything in context. It's when you start creating "contexts" that you put YOUR spin on the word's of the Bible to fit what YOU want it to say. Strange that you can't see the hypocrisy on your own comment. Jesus said don't judge. There is no context, it's a simple, straightforward instruction that needs no further explanation. Anything else is YOUR interpretation, not Christ's.
And I'm not even a Christian.- plasticmind, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1Except the context that I'm talking about are the very words that Jesus went on to say. Are you saying even Christ's own words don't impact the interpretation of what he said?
- Saiing, on 02/17/2008, -0/+12People don't send other people to hell. God does.
- benkrembs, on 02/16/2008, -28/+4Let me see if I get this right...
- bwtaha, on 02/16/2008, -2/+48you can tell charles barkley isn't the most intelligent person on earth, but you can also tell he is very careful in taking time to make sure what he says reflects his values, he unlike most christians has not allowed the politicians to use their beliefs to command them, he still thinks for himself as difficult as it may be, and i have a lot of respect for him because of that
he is clearly a good person and that is really all that matters- benkrembs, on 02/16/2008, -5/+2You can tell he's "clearly a good person"? Notice you're only saying this because he said something you agree with.
Just like you accuse christians of allowing politicians to control them with beliefs, your beliefs are not only controlling you but influencing how you deem somebody a "good person".
Look at someone's donations to charity, look at how they raised a family -- THOSE are valid criteria. But deciding he's a good person because he agrees with you? You're more blind than the groups you're attacking.- senae, on 02/16/2008, -2/+2How about deciding he's a good person based on the fact that he knows what he's talking about and is willing to view his religion as what it's meant to be (a flexible set of rules meant to enrich and guide our lives) and condemn those who use it for their own profit (by portraying it a rigid framework that has not changed since the dawn of time).
- Bersy, on 02/16/2008, -0/+5Donating to charity makes someone "good" now? I know a guy that claims he can do more good by getting rich than he ever could as a poor person - his reasoning: "I'll give money to charities". I find that kind of reasoning to be a veil for selfishness, and believing others who donate to charity are good makes you a sucker. That isn't to say that everyone who does is false, but I guess I'd be more impressed if they didn't go boasting about it or it didn't get publicized in some way. Because why does anyone else need to know, unless you want to look good in front of others?
- bwtaha, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1yup i sure can
- sinurgy, on 02/16/2008, -1/+4Charles may be poorly educated and as a result lack any sort of elegance in his delivery but I think he's actually quite intelligent.
- Arcesius, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Pretty much exactly what I was gonna say, except perhaps a bit more eloquent. =) He really seems like a good/smart guy.
- benkrembs, on 02/16/2008, -5/+2You can tell he's "clearly a good person"? Notice you're only saying this because he said something you agree with.
- ConanTL, on 02/16/2008, -3/+31You tell 'em Charles. He makes a great point. After 9/11 most of the right wing Christians were howling for blood an retribution. No sign of turning the other cheek.
- malman4, on 02/16/2008, -12/+4There were about 3000 Americans unable to turn the other cheek ahole.
- cliffdavis, on 02/16/2008, -0/+7And now, due to that blood lust and need for retribution, there are over 3200 more that are unable to turn the other cheek. Not to mention the increased instability in what was already the most unstable area on the globe, and the dire effects that have come up at home. Though, you are probably too busy missing the point to notice.
- GhostyBoy, on 02/16/2008, -0/+6Let's not forget the million ***** muslims that are dead because of this *****. How ***** many people have been killed who were not involved in the attacks in any way whatsoever? Of those million slaughtered how many do you honestly think took part in the conspiracy to commit mass murder on 9/11?
- cliffdavis, on 02/16/2008, -0/+7And now, due to that blood lust and need for retribution, there are over 3200 more that are unable to turn the other cheek. - benkrembs, on 02/16/2008, -5/+4So we should have "turned the other cheek" after 9/11 ?
That'd show em!- koreth, on 02/16/2008, -0/+8Only if we wanted to follow Jesus's teachings. Which we usually don't.
- ConanTL, on 02/16/2008, -0/+12It would have shown them. Can you imagine what the world would look like now if the US had chosen not to invade the middle east but rather chosen a peaceful solution and extended their arms to the middle east that felt betrayed by the US?
We had all the solidarity in the world. There was a candlelight vigil in Tehran. But we threw that all away to give in to our anger. I think Jesus was on to something when he said this. - GhostyBoy, on 02/16/2008, -0/+9I would try looking for who hit me, rather than lashing out blindly.
- Arcesius, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2God dammit - I dug you up accidently. But, you really don't understand the notion of forgiveness, do you? When do you forgive someone - only when they haven't wronged you? Or, just if it's really minor?
- SlimFastForYou, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2Yeah, we should have turned the other cheek - at least that's what I thought on 9/11. I worried that the government would make a lot of changes, and unfortunately I was right. I figured that we should pursue justice through diplomatic means (and aid to whoever could capture the attackers). Just like how we would deal with any other criminal. Unfortunately the "terrorists" changed us for the worse.
- senae, on 02/16/2008, -0/+8Actually, yeah, it really would have. As opposed to pissing off pretty much the whole world outside of NATO (And some countries in NATO too, I'd imagine) you could have brought the rest of the world into mourning with you, villainizing the terrorists instead of yourselves.

I did not let them get a word out of their mouth as I have told them time after time that I am not interested in their versions of Jesus, God and life in general. THEY JUST DON"T GET IT! Compassionate conservative?, "Judge Ye Not, less ye too shall be judged." Now get off of my front porch and bow down and kiss GWB's ass. - joeanon, on 02/16/2008, -7/+2You're probably being burned because a conservative on the runs first choice appears to be liberalism, which beside being highly misleading sounding is just a step backward.
Do you not gets bills from the mega-corporations that own your life ? Do you not make the realization that selling out all of America to corporate control is not a valid means to boycott the government ?
Most supporters of liberalism don't get the down side of small government amid super powerful corporations.
Like most people you probably don't realize that corporations are not just a happy attribute of capitalism. They have evolved through the century, gained incredible wealth and moved outside of the public eye. This is entirely against their original place in American society. Corporations were groups setup to meet production needs sanctioned by the state, for private profit, but with strict operational rules handed down by the state.
As you can guess, they don't operate on rules handed down from the state much these days.
The side of liberalism that you people never talk about is how much of a total failure most privatization programs have proven to be and that in almost every case we are paying a lot more as individuals and overall. Injecting competition artificially just isn't the same as supply and demand and usually doesn't work. Privatization in the energy industry has done ANYTHING but lower or stabilize costs.
The original US constitution might be seen as favorable to libertarians as they like state control, but it was a total failure. It's is ENTIRELY necessary for the states to have an equal force, aka the federal government pushing back at them. Just as the cons and the dems push against each other to form balance.
Let the state do as they please and costs will go way up as states fail to produce cost effective laws. The Confederacy of States produced chaos, non-national currency, extreme state patriotism, entirely powerless military, horribly complicated trade laws. Washington had to literally lay down the law, once the 2nd constitution was passed, because people had grown adjusted to near anarchy. Did you even know there was a second constitution ? Also there was a President before Washington, just technically not of the USA but of the CS (confederation of states_ signed under the articles of confederation.
Anyway, it's a failed strategy.
Listen once and you can forever change you outlook. You can't blame a democracy government for failure, you're blaming yourself for failure because YOU ARE the government. The fact we have low voter turn out is mostly not the governments fault. The people of the democracy must also accept blame and to me... libertarians just want to point the finger, offer no realistic solutions and disband central government. That's just not a plan.
Your just doing something to do something, out of desperation and disapproval, but not out of rational and logic.
It's a child's mindset to blame and reject. A man observes and repairs.
Most of the ideas of the US government are good enough, but they are clearly mismanaged. That doesn't mean government is useless, it means it needs new management and fresh ideas. It's easy to jump to conclusions out of desperation for your nations current state.
Small government isn't real, it's like saying lets make the military pink. You can't have a 10 billion dollar economy managed by a small powerless government. We used to do less in economic management, but the great depression almost destroyed this nation and since FDR and major social programs we've amassed more of our wealth than ever. So, the argument that social programs are just bad ideas is false and arguments without facts are pretty much always useless.
Have you ever heard the term that pure capitalism is Nasty, Brutish and Short ? Much like anarchy would be.
If you think capitalism can exist without regulation, you need to go back to college. They will, guaranteed, eat us alive. It's bad enough to wealth gap grows, the aristocracy is on the rise again and now they wield reduced liability via corporations. That's JUST what the ultra-wealthy needs, reduced liability.
Do you have ANY idea how broken the US medical industry is compared to the rest of the world.
Why is it that every other industrialized nation has national health care, longer lifespans, lower infant mortality and lower medical care costs. The ongoing lie is that their health care is inferior, but find a person with national health care who would prefer the US system. Go ahead..find them... if you do they are either a billionaire or mentally retarded.
Anyone, the way it really works is that some markets can benefit very well from free market competition and some cannot. Hospitals and power plants for instance have respective service areas that don't make economic sense to overlap but at the same time they can't compete with each other without market overlap.
Who thinks is a smart idea to build a hospital across the street from another hospital that isn't running max capacity for the same of competition. That doesn't make any sense.
Neither does building a power plant for the sake of competition.
No, you put hospitals and power plants where your running our of capacity, not necessarily where they will compete with each other, especially with carbon emissions becoming a big deal.
So, no matter how you spin it, some industries do better without a for profit competition driven model, medical is one of the top because of the excessive amount of paperwork and middlemen involved in the current private model.
When you step back, insurance companies are just like having social health care anyway, they represent community ownership and shared cost but they do so for profit and in a very divided and overlapping fashion. Plus they are influenced by doctors and medical supply companies easily and there is basically endless fraud.
At least, when a private industry fails for decades to stay competitive, give socialism a chance. It's not like cars, where when GM makes bad models we can just buy Japanese. More importantly all of the rest of the world is using national health care and quite happy with it. You won't see candidates in other countries running on a platform to privatize health care.
By observation, it just doesn't work. The UK has had national health care since reconstruction at the end of WW2. Japan is the 2nd richest nation in the world and has national health care.
Most importantly no matter what national health care is cheaper and in every case, so far, provides superior health care. PLUS of course, you can still go to a private doctor. It's worth it for our nation to be healthier, for our children and their physical and mental health. That equates to a healthier and happier nation and one that is more productive and less criminal minded. Most importantly it cost 2-3 times LESS per person to use a centralized, wholesale health care system (if you prefer to think of it that way since you've been brainwashed to think socialism is a bad word). Canada has national health care AND national education AND their taxes are 5% less AND they have like a 10 year budget surplus. Remember that one year we had a surplus.. oh .. it was Clinton wasn't it. You probably blocked that from your memory.
There have been a lot of dead end political groups in the past. Clearly libertarianism is BY FAR a run off of republicans and democrats unhappy with their parties and resenting the government itself for their OWN lack of political involvement and understanding.
It's easy enough to not be educated on economic and current events but still have a passionate opinion about them. It's just not a practical position for future leaders of America. We really aren't doing THAT bad and if we were, still, blind change is not the solution.
As the global market puts more fiscal pressure on America we need a strong central government even more.
WTF will we when China's decides to becomes aggressive about it's economic edge ? Ask Texas and California to go kick it's ass ? Cmon, with India and China quickly growing we are far from in a position to lay down and let the world change around us. Won't take long after that we'll have to adopt the EURO just to keep our bread lines steady. If it's true, it takes money to make money, having a the US capable of spending 2-5 trillion dollars a year is quite an amazing power. No nation can compare to that nor will be able to for decades. Of course, it's also a chance to waste 2-5 trillion dollars a year on war and oil and other unsustainable ideas.
Just think of this way. The space race was probably American's shining moment. We were untouchable and JFK's rallied the nations imagination and our fiscal potential. Now it wasn't an investment if pure fiscal nature, but the nation loved it and we showed the world why America is the premiere economic and technological super power. However, there can be no doubt, we could have never accomplished this without a strong federal government and risky congressional spending.
As a single event that sums up US history, what has any one state ever done ?
I thin libertarians are selfish and would trade the well being of the nation for their own well being, while not seeing the two are highly interconnected. Your the, I can't see if from my backyard people. Well, it's toxic waste and it's seeping into your well water, you don't need to see it, you just have to move. GOD DAMN IF ANY GOVERNMENT gonna tell me to move off my land.
Shut up and realize your one part of a giant machine than YOU NEED to live comfortably. Home schooling your kids and calling for the end to government funded schools IS NOT A SOLUTION. Sorry you want your child to be dumb, and easy to control, but that also not in the benefit of the nation. When you're dead, it's US that has to take care of your half ass educated child. You got all those rights you wanted though. The right to not educate your child, the right to work 16 hours a day without overtime, the right to waste fuel and pollute as if it only effected you.
It's more like libertarians are just like rejecting the very premise of civilization and government
and then defining a political party based on that emotion. When it comes down to it, you can't really make a party out of that AND even if you did... you'd be the next NEO-CONs.
How about before you mindlessly join a political party you like.. do some research, ask the political experts, have a clue.
You don't understand the basic premise of political parties and the dynamics of the government. What today was moderate tomorrow will be liberal. You can realistically be in constant disagreement with a dynamic view that changes with public opinion.
Instead of running to the libertarian party, you might make real change among your peers in one of the active parties. Plus only dumb conservatives think that everyone in the party thinks alike, The dems have long held the view that I'm a Dem, your a dem, but we can vary to an amazing degree and that doesn't make me hate the political party.
There are a lot of dems that vote conservative quite often. It's about appealing to your exact voting district also not about what republican and democratic means. They mean something different every year anyway.- hollyberrry, on 02/17/2008, -0/+6Could you be more succinct? It's like reading a damn book. - stealthc, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4Good God, what a wall of text. And yet I can rebuff the entire thing by saying: overt corporate power is granted by the State, so smaller government and respect for the rule of law is the answer to big business and to big government. Liberty does allow for the existence of selfishness, only because it is a philosophy that knows charity by force is no charity at all.
I find it ironic that near the end of your book in digg comment form, you tell someone to "shut up." I also found your comment about homeschooling rather amusing. "Sorry you want your child to be dumb, and easy to control, but that also not in the benefit of the nation." Are you of the belief that our mass education system is producing independent thinkers? It only took the first couple of months of public high school for me to realize the whole apparatus was built for crushing individualism, independence, and any hint of creativity. The homeschooled/private schooled kids I've met have college level educations and intellects compared to the burger-chomping cretins our government schools crank out. - Jpotts12, on 02/17/2008, -0/+0This isn't the time or the place for an in-depth political discussion. Unfortunately, you're too stupid to think before you talk on TV... and as a result, your words will be twisted, and you'll be blasted for what you didn't intend to say. Learn the game!

Either way, are you going to tell me that anyone who leans more right than left needs to be generalized in the way Charles says? I'm voting Obama, and I've always voted Democrat. I'm just making a point that his words will be twisted by the media by everyone on the right, ultimately until his point is truly lost, and he is made to look like a complete buffoon. My concern is that his point would be lost.. I'm arguing with his rhetoric-- not his point. Thanks for reading between the lines.
- ZenMojo, on 02/16/2008, -1/+1So, who are you voting for, Felonius? John McCain?
- ICSU, on 02/16/2008, -0/+4It didn't take long for the "no true Scotsman" fallacy to be used.
- joeanon, on 02/16/2008, -2/+2Conservatives only true trait is they believe in dragging their feet anytime it comes to change and calling it tradition.
Well tradition is dynamic and changes with the culture, but conservatives and othe traditionalist don't change and therefore fail o represent the majority.
The CON's haven't had a good President since Eisenhower.
Unfortunately the tradition the CONS follow is blind and fails to take into account the changing world around them. So the solution to any moral problem to a CON is simple, let the state handle it, but sometimes such as in the case of slavery, womans rights, torture, we need federal law to keep the ASSHOLEs who elect professional wrestlers as governors from making their own retarded versions of civil rights.
The NEO-CONS simply took the existing GoldWater-Regan base of morons and pumped them up with lies even more and they fell for it HOOK, LINE AND YES our nation is sinking.
Conservative leaders may tell you they believe in your civil rights and support that through small government, BUT that's BS. The world has changed. When we abolished slavery corporate laywers took that chance to gain corporate rights just as slaves had gained equality so did the corporate entity. By one quick supreme court ruling we empowered corporations to basically take over American wealth. Before that corporations were sanctioned by the state and allowed to work only with tight restrictions and for a set period of time.
Now, that we've pumped up the corporations, we can't just resort back to small government and wait for the 1920's to return. The government is dynamic and when we change fundamental balances it means we cannot just revert back to how things were.
The wealth gap is growing faster and faster every year and as it does democracy is thwarted by wealth. Corporations are at the forefront of this wealth and constantly abuse our democracy. At this point reverting to small government would give you only one right, to be owned by Corporate America.
Small government is a concept for the small mind to easily uderstand. However, if anyone preaching this solution had any sense they would target parts of the government instead of generalizing against it.
When you say I want a small government. You must realize your also saying I want the people to have less power to make change, less money, less military.
And I know, you've been told that small government means more money. It might, but that's more money in MANY hands, not working together. If I was corporate American that's exacty what I would want.
That's right get the government OUT of my way so I can drill and strip mine and send your children to the plant. We can move RIGHT back to a 12 hour workday, repeal all those stupid child labor laws (what child doesn't want to work for their family now that's tradition boy). We can kill min wage, workmens comp, unemployment, and you can just sell your soul right to the shareholders.
THIS is how America used to be. THIS is where the conservative tradition will lead you. In fact, this is WHERE they had led you. You can't run and hide from the failure of conservative strategies forever.
They say one thing and do another and have been for decades. The ONLY good thing about conservatives is that WAY back in the day, they were the liberal underdog party. They split from THE original political party for greater liberal legislation.
Now years latter the conservatives are the liberal and the liberals are the conservatives.
AND we still have people trying to tell us about original conservative ideals.
There are none. The original ideals are LIBERAL, they are LONG gone and what you have left is the slow death of a party as it sells out before it's final demise.
Why would you think there is magic formula to running a government anyway ? The world and nation change and so must our governing techniques. We are now and forever part of the global marketplace. It's not a choice, it's the reality of life. The US cannot change so much that we dictate all that is on Earth.
More importantly though you want to go crawl into your hole when change comes, as a nation we have a greater responsibility than our individual fears.
The GOP is leading us to a greater fate than you can see. We have become the military industrial complex Eisenhower warned us of 50+ years ago. We are QUITE LITERALLY becoming a fascist nation.- Arcesius, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1Too long - buried.
- BadFast, on 02/16/2008, -0/+5I think he was referring to morons like you.
- Look4Truth, on 02/16/2008, -10/+6No different that the democratic party Chuck.
- stillasleep00, on 02/16/2008, -1/+56Jon Stewart: I could totally see us as a gay couple
Charles Barkley: Well, people would know who the man in the relationship was- trogdorBURN, on 02/17/2008, -2/+1who?
- Mikhail101, on 02/16/2008, -14/+14I dont think he has heard of Ron Paul
- ZenMojo, on 02/16/2008, -14/+4Ron Paul's Pro-Life and Pro-Death Penalty and anti-Gay Marriage.

- MadBobMacMad, on 02/19/2008, -0/+0parson me Zen, but your statement shows you know absolutely nothing about Ron Paul. Might I suggest you educate yourself about him rather than remain in the blissful peace of ignorance?
- rolf, on 02/16/2008, -2/+9Ron Paul
- JoeVet, on 02/16/2008, -12/+3Ron Paul is pro-state religion and pro-discrimination against homosexuals.
- Evildudetx, on 02/16/2008, -8/+2Ron Paul shot himself in the foot as far as I am concerned when he mentioned he doesn't believe in evolution.
- Mikhail101, on 02/16/2008, -1/+8omg seriosuly why the ***** do you care, its people like you who cause the democratic system fail.
Would you vote for a person who believes in evolution but whats to nuke the middle easy silly or somone who doesnt believe in evolution but wants world peace and has strong economic and social policies.
This is why George Bush gets into power, half the people voted for him just because he would stop gay marriages, they dont look at other important things but small stupid trivial things. Ron Paul wants to minimize the control of the government so hes probably not gonna shove creationism in the school curriculum- frogsgowhoyah, on 02/17/2008, -5/+0Couldnt I vote for someone who believes in evolution and wants to stop the war? Crap, that wasn't one of the choices. Oh reasoning for brining up bush failed. He didn't believe in evolution either. And the people who helped bring him in didn't believe in evolution. I dont even know where to go, the meantion of creationism and bush in the same dialog makes my brain freeze.
- Mikhail101, on 02/17/2008, -0/+4your just stereotyping, that just shows you are as ignorant as the people are speaking about

- kinerry, on 02/17/2008, -0/+2It's doesn't really matter, he's libertarian.
That means he thinks you have a right to believe whatever you want as long as you don't force it on other people. It's akin to not wanting to be ass *****, but not stopping others to if they want to.
You = fail
- Mikhail101, on 02/16/2008, -1/+8omg seriosuly why the ***** do you care, its people like you who cause the democratic system fail.
- stealthc, on 02/17/2008, -3/+2The thinking inherent to evolutionism revolves so much around assuming that since we know evolution HAS TO BE TRUE, we have to make all sorts of other intellectual contortions about what MUST have happened in spite of there being no evidence in the fossil record of any such thing. We don't have any evidence that cumulative mutations do anything except harm an organism. We don't have any evidence in the fossil record that one species gradually turned into another.
What we have is a fossil record full of explosions of fully-formed complex life forms. There are creatures from 400 million years ago which persist today in their ancient forms.
Digg me down, yell about how I must think the earth is only a few generations old, call me a religious loony, mock me for believing what the Cambrian Explosion makes painfully obvious, but reality speaks for itself. I don't need digg's approval. I don't need to convert you. Have a nice day.- kinerry, on 02/17/2008, -1/+1There's plenty of record...have you actually opened a textbook in your life?

- Acewrap, on 02/16/2008, -1/+7So, why did you click on this article again? Just to post that you didn't like it? Are you really that much of an *****? If you don't want to read something, don't click on it.
- drakethegreat, on 02/17/2008, -0/+1Another ***** on digg. Nuff Said.
- JointVenture, on 02/16/2008, -15/+1If he had said this about ISLAM there would be an OUTCRY.
- illegalcortex, on 02/16/2008, -0/+12Actually, it's frequently said that people like Osama bin Laden and other extremists aren't following the actual teachings of Islam. Where have you been?
- GhostyBoy, on 02/16/2008, -2/+1Osama bin Laden is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

- davemartin7777, on 02/16/2008, -0/+9What a red herring.
Why don't you address what he ACTUALLY said instead of ***** you're making up yourself?
His comment is abut the Republican, Reich-wing phony-baloney "Christians" neo-fascist hypocrites that want to run (and spy on) America (into the ground). In other news, "Robert A. McKee, a long-serving Republican delegate from Western Maryland, announced his resignation yesterday after authorities, who say they are conducting a child pornography investigation, seized two computers, videotapes and printed materials from his Hagerstown home."

- zoziw, on 02/16/2008, -9/+4Ok, so conservatives are fake Christians, he can say this because he doesn't work for them and he wants to be the Governor of Alabama in 2014...got it.

What is Digg?
