- voxlisa999, on 09/12/2008, -7/+81FTA:
On Tuesday night, a serious journalist finally gagged in revulsion at so-called campaign coverage.
On CNN, Mark Halperin, TIME magazine's principled and thoughtful political analyst, shook his head in dismay as the network's Anderson Cooper prodded him to dissect the "lipstick" imbroglio. Halperin wouldn't go there."Stop the madness!" Halperin fumed in exasperation, adding that the moment marked "one of the low days of our collective coverage of this campaign."
With the nation in economic meltdown and multi-front wars, Halperin summoned the Power of No. He declined to engage what he considered a stupid and distracting "issue" in the final weeks of one of the most important presidential campaigns in our nation's history.
The truth or legitimacy of what he said was not seriously questioned. Today, in the echo chamber of the fast-moving web and cable news environment, the truth of something is almost immaterial as long as the charge can be repeated and repeated and repeated again.
The news media's passive willingness to be used by campaigns is bad enough. But add to that the effort to stifle serious questioning of such things as Sarah Palin's political history -- a journalistic inquiry that is central to the role of a responsible press. The public's broad contempt for press coverage of the stupid stuff creates fertile ground for silencing legitimate, tough reporting. For instance, the McCain campaign canceled John McCain's appearance on CNN's Larry King show when CNN reporter Campbell Brown had the audacity to ask some probing questions. It was a move right out of the Bush Administration's playbook for punishing pesky reporters.
ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH!- InRussetShadows, on 09/12/2008, -9/+2With this kind of paranoia I'm surprised they even give you weekend visitation. "Punishing" "pesky" reporters, indeed.

Why is she so popular with some?
I just realized it:
Sarah Palin is the BEARDED LADY in the circus sideshow. Everyone wants to gawk at her! She’s a “curiosity” ! - idarkiswordi, on 09/13/2008, -5/+6Wow... I seriously just read most of the comments and the irony is so strong its almost revolting. Consider the message of the story. It claims that the media is shadowing real issues with minute ***** that isn't news. So how doth Digg respond?
"Seriously. Did the ***** Huffington Post..."
"... says the huffington post."
"Huffpo asking the media to stop spreading lies?"
"Huffington Post wants to talk about truth and stopping the lies?"
"Huffington post ***** complaining about OTHER press focusing on lies!"
"If this isn't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is."
This is sad Digg. You take an article that is discussing how the issues are ignored, and you respond by ignoring them and discussing your hatred for a particular media outlet. That should be totally acceptable if some content to back up how that relates to the story is offered but responding with ignorant rants about non-issues continues to plague even places like Digg. Sad.- ThinkOutTheBox, on 09/14/2008, -1/+1This is the Pot calling the Kettle Black. It's Ok for Huff Post to run articles being critical of McCain and Palin but when their candidate goes and says something completely stupid they want everybody to shut up about it. Especially when that one line might have cost him the election.

- InRussetShadows, on 09/12/2008, -37/+6McCarthyism is a figment of the left's fervid imaginations, and a convenient excuse to cover up the numerous communists in Hollywood at that time. As for "stop being hacks", is the best you can do is find someone who said no to discussing lipstick?

His methods were terrible but he actually was totally correct to think there was a large Russian attempt at the time to work its way in from the inside.
- eyepennies, on 09/13/2008, -1/+6Right, but that isn't McCarthyism. I agree that Russia was a real threat, but saying that McCarthyism was invented by the liberal commies in Hollywood is just ignorance. Sorry.

- stone2020, on 09/14/2008, -0/+1Not really. She promised it. Does Nancy Pelosi not understand the Speaker of the House job? Does she not know about the 2/3 majority? Or is the fault of the people that elected her and didn't realize she couldn't do what she said she was gonna do?

Since the "Freedom of the Press" was formalized, it was envisioned to be an important part of the checks and balances of our government and society. Big money has created a situation of just feeding us what they think we want to hear. "If it bleeds it leads" was a low at the time, but it has gotten much worse since then. It's time for the media to clone a new backbone. They need to understand that they can do investigative journalism AND still make profits.- littlequeenie, on 09/12/2008, -0/+14Freedom of the press as part of the checks and balances! What a concept! I remember when there was such a thing as investigative journalism, when journalism was a respected profession. Now all they do is repeat and regurgitate talking points and sound bites.
ENOUGH!! No more lipstick or other *****! I want the issues discussed! The election is way too close to be bothering with this *****!!!! The media has to say enough of this ***** but they also owe us more - they need to expose the lies! The bridge to nowhere that she says she doesn't support, the taxes McCain says Obama will impose on us, etc - skatoolaki, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5I truly believe that's why independent bloggers and news sources have gained more credibility in the past few years.

- mach68, on 09/12/2008, -2/+52This only exemplifies the “Dumbing Down of America”. Talking Points are more important than the root issues. Sarah Palin does not have the worldliness to represent the USA on the world stage. Most of the individuals running countries around the world are highly educated and extremely adept in their chosen arena. I have had the opportunity of living in both North America and Europe. I have travelled extensively throughout the world and I am constantly amazed by how similar “Humanity” is everywhere. Sarah Palin has a pre-conceived and well programmed misconception about our world and that ignorance will be translated in to a major catastrophe if she and McCain are elected in November. What I don’t understand is why the American people cannot see through this veneer.

Ha.
EVERYONE sees through it. It all comes down to whether or not the citizen thinks they will benefit from a republican in the white house. So if they 1. are fantastically rich and would like continued tax breaks or 2. would like to further their religious agenda in the government, they are all for 4 more years of the destruction of America.
Sadly, there are enough of the first type to control the media and through them, the second type.

WHAT FREAKIN' UNMITIGATED GALL!
THE HUFF PO WHORES ARE ACTUALLY ACCUSING "BIG MEDIA" OF BAD REPORTING???????
ARE THEY NOT MARXIST ENUF FOR THE HUFFPO UNTRALEFTIES?
ABSOLUTELY SHAMELESS............
(And after all the lies they have spewed out in the last week about Palin - it's incredible)- charm803, on 09/13/2008, -2/+4You are missing the point.
Just because YOU come to digg and read a million HuffPo posts, doesn't mean that it is being reported in the media.
Journalists have a responsibility. HuffPo is a collection of bloggers. Two different things. - flashback99, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1congratulations, you've learned a few new big words. now run along and quickly go learn what they mean.
- charm803, on 09/13/2008, -2/+4You are missing the point.
- Arkons24, on 09/13/2008, -15/+9I almost thought this was going to be a well thought out article. Then I slapped myself for even thinking Fluff Post could post something that might not be tinged by their overwhelming bias. It is laughable that they have the arrogance to run an article about the theater put on by the media and both campaigns and refuse to acknowledge that their side has taken part.
In the same way those that still believe in ancient myths are played by republicans preaching the gospel, so are well-intentioned bleeding hearts manipulated by democrats preaching change ...- nhand42, on 09/13/2008, -1/+8HuffPost is a blog. The content comes from anonymous bloggers.
To compare the HuffPost to the MSM is as stupid as when Tucker chastised Jon Stewart for not asking hard hitting questions on the Daily Show. It's not even apples and oranges.
If you have to look to the HuffPost to find the opposite of the MSM, then you're already struggling to find any criticism of republicans in the actual MSM. Liberal media? What a load of *****.- Arkons24, on 09/13/2008, -2/+2So what? Being a blog means that you aren't responsible for accurate content? You can lie, distort and tinge the truth to the same degree that the campaigns themselves do just because you're a blog?
Sorry buddy. I call a spade a spade and huff post is *****. I don't care if it is a blog or not. As for the media not having a liberal bias (excepting cnbc and fox news), you should try actually watching it sometime. Thank god MSNBC finally kicked Matthews and Olbertrash to the curb - their bias was already more blatant than any other network's without those two clowns. All the networks have bias now, you'd have to be blind not to realize it - CNBC and Fox to the right and MSNBC and CNN to the left. But it is pretty typical of liberals to only be able to see criticism directed towards the other side, so I guess I can't really expect you to get it. - nhand42, on 09/13/2008, -1/+1A blog can't be held to the same level of responsibility as a campaign or a media channel. If you think they are equivalent then you have a real problem with perspective.
- Arkons24, on 09/13/2008, -1/+1No one can be held to any level of responsibility, least of all political campaigns and the media. Are you that ignorant?
And I'm certainly not holding Fluffpost to any level of responsibility ... they are on the same level as alien autopsies as far as credibility and responsibility go.
- Arkons24, on 09/13/2008, -2/+2So what? Being a blog means that you aren't responsible for accurate content? You can lie, distort and tinge the truth to the same degree that the campaigns themselves do just because you're a blog?

- Awspire, on 09/13/2008, -3/+6Ya, like Arianna Huffington is'nt trying to build a media empire. Her collection of left wing whiners deliver the most biased points of view.
- metaknite, on 09/13/2008, -1/+2So it is alright to spread lies as long as you aren't big.
- OfNumbers, on 09/13/2008, -7/+4Huffpo is a website. Not a major media station.
- RAGEdemon, on 09/13/2008, -2/+10MSM don't give a ***** about the truth. I'm surprised some people have a hard time realizing this simple fact. All MSM cares about is money, number of sales, and ratings.
And nothing gets more people interested than a scandal. Who cares if it's lies. As long as they can quote others as the source, they don't have anything to worry about.- FreddieD, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6You are exactly right. While I tend to lean left, my wife is EXTREMELY liberal, and she exclusively watches MSNBC's election coverage so she can hear what Olbermann and Maddow (their big star reporters) are saying next. While they don't have the balls to call themselves Fair and Balanced, you pretty much have to agree that those folks lean left.
My point is, MSM says whatever it thinks it can get away with in order to get viewers. If it's all of a sudden considered bad journalism to report political ad garbage then they will stop, but it's not and they'll continue... to incite their "fan base".
I only wish that sites like FactCheck.org could be advertised constantly on television so the nation can get armed with the real facts, on both sides. I don't want someone voting for Obama specifically because they think Palin tried to secede Alaska from the union, and i SURE as hell dont want anybody to vote McCain because they think Obama wants to teach sex ed to kindergarteners.- DuneChild, on 09/13/2008, -1/+0Dude, Olbermann is not a reporter most of the time, he's a talk-show host. There is a huge difference. It is a common misconception though, because Fox News is not nearly as biased as everyone claims. Talk shows on Fox News are biased, but the reporting is actually pretty fair.

I actually prefer big media to the online media propaganda from sites like Huffington Post and Rawstory and ThinkProgress.
- Awspire, on 09/13/2008, -3/+6True. I've found that Big Media is a bit more impartial, and far more accurate and professional compared to that found on the net. I was hoping the internet would be an outlet for some of the most impartial reporting of a new age. But, it's the exact opposite. The internet is nothing but an outlet for those hardcore idealist's trying to get their views heard and disseminate propaganda in ways found new everyday.
Truly pathetic.
*turns on CNN*

- tonycomp, on 09/13/2008, -9/+9Buried for being from huffingtonpost.com--do any of you know what a credible source is? This ***** is as accurate as the National Enquirer.
- skatoolaki, on 09/13/2008, -2/+2And so then you are burying the obvious evidence of the actual CNN video? Nice.
- Awspire, on 09/13/2008, -8/+10Arianna Huffington has to be the biggest hypocrite on the net. Huffington, once an advocate for right-wing ideals, well, at least thats what she claims, now claims her views have become leftist, hence Leftpo, uh, I mean Huffpo. Which, I'm assuming she's leaned left since it's a bit more profitable these days, particularly among web dwellers. She'll change wind where the money blows, which leads me to trust nothing her website regurgitates.
- truck87bp, on 09/13/2008, -2/+2That sounded like it was written for national TV.
- battleangel7, on 09/13/2008, -13/+15huffingtonpost.com accusing the press of lies?
Is this a joke? - ATXChappy, on 09/13/2008, -2/+5I'm no big fan of Alex Jones. But, he makes some good points sometimes. The media just repeats what politicians and government officials say. With no independent research or fact checking of their own. Below are links to 2 articles about how the government uses miss information in it's drug statistics. And, a link to the latest release of statistics from the same office with no questioning of the facts.

- Richandler, on 09/13/2008, -3/+4It seems like every news orginization comes out with an article like this at least 4 times a year. It's so funny how empty the message is. Jones run for congress if you want to change the country. Journalism is such an intellectually bankrupt profession. Zero critical thinking comes from any of these people. Jefferson said it best when he advised people not to read newspapers.
- btschul, on 09/13/2008, -9/+2Hahaha, Yeah, because the Huffington Joke is a bastion of truth and fair and balanced reporting. Don't try to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye until you get that log out of yours, Arianna.
- yellowsnowcone, on 09/13/2008, -5/+7Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, meet pot.
- DuneChild, on 09/13/2008, -3/+8So, I guess we're not actually going to comment on the point of the article, just that it came from Huffington. Okay, yes, we see the inherent contradiction here, but that does not mean we can't discuss the topic. Instead, we'll just use ad hominem attacks because we don't actually want to stop spreading gossip and rumors about candidates.
- skatoolaki, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3Very well put - thank you.
- phathead, on 09/13/2008, -1/+3You got it! You want to know why? Cause the huffington post and all the other rags on the internet fuel the fire. No one talks about anything that will make a ***** of difference. They are all out to make money. Truly talking about a wide range of solutions to this country's problems or even the actual roots of the problems must put the American public to sleep. Christ the closest we get to a more fiscally sound policy talk is the "bridge to nowhere" ear marks. OK what are you going to do with the other 99.05% of the federal budget...increase it with either more war or more socialist programs neither of which we can afford.
Vote third party
- Browzer, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6The problem is that most pundits on TV just aren't that educated about the issues. Sure, it's easy to spend an hour doing a circle-jerk about the latest polls and stupid gaffs. But to actually discuss the differences between Obama and McCain's tax plans? Health care? Energy proposals? That, like, would require reading 'n stuff. Not to mention that it would actually require a grasp of facts.
And the issues don't have to be boring. Why not talk about Obama's claim that McCain wants to tax people's health care? Or Obama's plan for new energy sources? (I'm an Obama supporter, but McCain supporters could easily come up with a list of McCain issues to talk about, too).- uthandabantu, on 09/14/2008, -0/+0Amen Browzer. You're right: while many journalists *may* have a lot of real world experience, they often lack background to deal with issues. Furthermore, the constraints of production often limit their ability to go off script.
That's why we're supposed to use the Internet to debate the issues. Such as: the issue isn't whether the Huff Po is leftist, but the content of the story. In other words, do we believe that the MSM has focused on fluff such as lipstick and sex education for the last two weeks and left us dangling on the issues?
I do believe that, and that's irregardless of whether I think the HP is "ultralefty" or whatever. Just because a person doesn't agree with the politics doesn't mean they need to stick their head in the sand about it.
Let's discuss the issues across party lines. Sarah Palin's lipstick is not an issue!
